R.M.: I’ve been very happy with this knock box. It replaces a larger, industrial kitchen sized one for me. The smaller size took some getting used to because I have to empty this one after every four or so espresso pucks, but that’s not a big deal. The bar sits in place well and there’s enough room to knock a portafilter on it. Overall, I love it. Although I complain about it being a tad small, I got it because it’s smaller and takes up less space on the counter. The bean imprints on the bar are kind of a cool touch, too.

Unless you have customized your own operational espresso bar this a
style of knock box will only cause you frustration... Because it has a special place to do its job that makes the style handy ....which your home lacks.
To most this will come across as trivial. --I am certain plenty eyes will roll.--
Because who am I to tell you whether you should clean coffee grounds in this box or another? All of them serve the same purpose in the same way right.

I assure you that is not the case.

Patrick Mrowczynski: Though it's plastic, it's sturdy plastic. The ability to beat on it with your tamper to get out the pucks of coffee can't be underestimated on this. The coffee puck goes straight down and because the bar is round, nothing sticks (and you can either rotate it, or shake the knock box).

When it comes time to dump the grounds (I use a plastic bag) you can easily remove the center bar and simply "turn and dump" it for gardening.

Low key, inexpensive, sturdy and does exactly what you need it to do - a perfect product!

As an aside, if your puck is too watery, you may be running too fine. If it's too solid (hard to remove) then you're going the other way with too coarse. The happy medium is going to be a puck that comes out in one piece, little remaining in the portafilter. To help, I switch over to steaming and then back to dumping the puck after drawing my shot. Wait too long, and the heat from the espresso machine dries things out and then I'm scrubbing (and I'm scrubbing if I'm forgetting!)
