Amazon CustomerAmazon Customer: Salinity Refractometer, Aquarium & Seawater - Dual Scale (1.0 to 1.070 S.G.) by Agriculture Solutions
I've had this for about 7 months and love it. I haven't had to calibrate it since it came calibrated but I did play around with it to familiarize myself with the product. It accurately tells me the salinity instantly and is necessary to have if you own a reef tank. Before owning a ATO, my salinity would vary depending on evaporation so this helped me maintain a good level (I now have a ATO so my salinity is constantly perfect) Now I only use my refractometer after water changes to make sure its good and the ATO will take care of the rest. I bought a second one to give to my brother who was having a similar problem that I mentioned above. $20 No Brainer, Protect your investment!
Comes with:
-10 mL Dropper
-Plastic case with foam padding (keeps mine in immaculate condition)
-Soft eyeglass cloth
Simple process:
-Place 2 drops of saltwater on the glass using the provided dropper and lower the plastic shield gently over top
-Hold the refractometer facing towards a bright light source
-Look into the refractometer and determine the...

KevNSarHa: If you are serious about your livestock and care about their wellbeing, I highly suggest getting a refractometer, and while this one may not be 'top of the line', I'm confident it's accurate. My hydrometer shows my salinity at 1.025, after checking with the refractometer, it's at 1.030! Needless to say I had to drain a bit of water out of my 180gal and add just RODI freshwater to even the salinity out.
This seems to be the general consensus with everyone. Hydrometer is DANGEROUSLY off.
This specific one was also recommended to me by someone with multiple refractometers, you just can't beat the price. It's 5 or 10 dollars more than a hydrometer.
I did NOT receive a discount or free item for this review.. Just my two cents.
Calibrating is easy, the instructions do not show how, use RODI, or if you for some reason aren't using RODI water, maybe distilled will work or the calibration fluid they offer on amazon. I used RODI water and Calibrating is as simple as dropping a few drops onto the slat, closing the clear lid, looking through the scope at a light source and switch the screw hole with provided screw driver(located on top, coveted by small rubber...

Fredy: Salinity Refractometer, Aquarium & Seawater - Dual Scale (1.0 to 1.070 S.G.) by Agriculture Solutions
This is one amazing instrument and the only way to inexpensively test for Salinity, worked great and is a way better made then I expected, easy to calibrate just use distilled water ( if you don't have distilled water just freeze a water bottle, microwave a cup of water to almost a boil, hold frozen water bottle over hot cup of water, when moister from steam forms on the outside of water bottle it will start to drip use this to calibrate as you only need a drop or two) put two drops on the blue glass put clear glass cover over blue glass check you can't have any bubbles and glass needs to be totally covered with distilled water. Look through and focus as needed. Use the screwdriver provided and adjust to 1.00 Wipe off the distilled water from the glass (with the cleaning cloth provided) now put two drops of your aquarium water on the glass and test it the same way you tested the distilled water (don't forget to dry before you put it away). Then take a sample to your fish shop to test if your refract meter is accurate. Instructions are hidden inside the case under the molded...

Charra Hammett: Excellent quality. LFS store sold exact same one for $79! Came with a very nice canvas style case, dropper, mini screwdriver, cleaning cloth and instructions. The only reason I give it a 4 star instead of 5 is because of the instructions. Nothing telling you exactly how to calibrate it.
So here are the steps:
1. Take small cap off of the knob behind the pointed part and get your screwdriver ready
2. Take a few drops of RO water and open the top of the slide area and drop on slide (tap water works too I’ve heard but no guarantees)
3. Close glass top
4. Look through the eye piece and point toward any light then twist the eye piece until you can see clearly
5. Turn screw driver until the level is all the way to the “0” on the right side of the scale (you are calibrating the refractometer to zero because RO water has ZERO salinity)
Boom you are done!
To read it simply put a few drops of your tank water on the slide and close top then hold up
to the light. That’s it! Rinse and Wipe clean after each use. Recalibrate every so often to keep it accurate.
