Abraham Matthew galceranAbraham Matthew galceran: So I am a mead maker and this product has been what REVOLUTIONED my mead making. I add it into my must during primary fermentation or even on secondary that is just aging and it has done wonders for my mead. It clears up a lot of that gunk and stuff still in suspension that gives a nasty taste to your mead which will fall out with aging. But i can say this speeds up my aging process by at LEAST 5 months maybe even more. If you have a mead that has been aging and doesn't quite have the taste you want it to have then I suggest that you buy this. A little bit goes a long way and it is so satisfying to see all of the stuff that falls to the bottom in such a short time. the picture above had no sediment at the bottom until i added the bentonite and it tasted BEAUTIFUL afterward. One picture was during primary fermentation and it definitely helped remove a lot of stuff early one which is when you're supposed to add bentonite to be most effective.

WellTrainedMonkey: I was more used to using gelatin for fining and was slightly unsure about adding what literally is a fine particle sand to my drink. However, since gelatin is said to be capable of stripping away tannin, but this won't, I had no option but to give it a try. (I had already added oak months ago)

Followed the direction on the package semi-precisely and poured hot water into a bit of this sand and made ... mud.
Poured it into my mead and gave it a stir, left it sit in the cold for a week and Volia! it became transparent.
I think I'll continue using bentonite from now on. (Or use gelatin and add oak after that?)

This package contains decent amount for the money spent, very happy with the purchase.

voltron: i've tried a few different fining agents and even the bentonite/sparkalloid combo. And come of my prettiest looking wine come from just using bentonite. you can use is pretty much anything. I personally use it after fermentation has completed, i rack to a new container add my bentonite and in a day you can see it clearing. I personally dont like sparkalloid, seems to be slow, and seem to lead to sediment in some bottles since sparkaloid in theory can take up a month to clear. when using it as part of a combo, it seems to take a step backward. What i mean is that i get a really clear product after bentonite, if followed with sparkalloid it causes cloudness that last for two to three weeks. so im not a big fan of the sparkalloid/bentonite combo. Bentonite i love by itself. if i want to super polish my wine, i filter after bentonite.
