VGL: I’ve been using this brand for fifteen years. Tried other brands a couple of times just for the heck of it, but Real Flame is the best and the one I continue to choose. Great product and the company provides friendly, satisfying customer service.

David HaymanDavid Hayman: I ordered 4 cases of gel fuel. 3 cases arrived so far. Of those 3 cases 9 cans were broken open and leaking. But customer service has a quick turnaround. People complaining of smells should know you need to use it in a well ventilated area, especially for the last 25% of a burn. It's not an issue in a living room, but burning anything in a bedroom with a door and window shut is a generally bad idea

They are easy to light (so be careful). They burn 2~3 hours. I think you would need to be over top of it for any useful heat and even then, I think that's negligible. I usually use two at a time (our fireplace will hold three). IMHO they are not cheap, but the cost is in line with other similar options.
