scammed: Exceedingly enjoyable and humorous condensed history of a people and country without equal. I marvel and adore unparalleled British literature, poetry, science (Newton, Rutherford….), ordered structure, pageantry, courage, system of law, etc, etc…. lions and lionesses..

Penfold: Knowing the author and his abilities to tell stories from his YouTube channel, I was more than interested in buying this book. It's funny, fascinating and full of facts - though, because of the uncensored language, it's definitely for the grownups! (It's not full of obscenity, it's just... "honest-to-god Anglo-Saxon", when appropriate, even if he's using French ;))
This is where it differs from even the most light-hearted of academic books (many of which I have read either out of choice or as "official" study material). He gives enough information without drowning the reader in dates to remember (they're there, you just don't have to learn them to enjoy your new-found knowledge), and keeps you wanting to continue reading. However the chapters are no so long as to suffocate you - it's a definite "pick up and put down on demand" type book, and none the worse for that.
The book ends around the start of the 20th century, with WWI kicking off in the background, so to speak. It doesn't deal with that or its build up, so if that's what you're looking for, it's not for you. Having read many such books, it's a nice change to end on this period looking in a different...

Luis Manuel: I bought the kindle version.
The book is written in an interesting way, Arran the Author has this characteristic british humour so it is fun to learn about the facts that were important and how he describe the main characters as humans, normal people that made mistakes, that affected the british kingdom.
I recommend it, you will enjoy the book and also I recommend his youtube channel Thougthy 2. It is funny because I discovered his channel and now that I read the book I can hear his voice as a narrator.

Hosehead: Loved every page of this delightful book. Also, and no mean feat in these ridiculous times, the author manages to walk the tightrope of political labeling like a boss. Is he on the right? The left? What a silly question!

Hummingbirder: Arran Lomas brings us a thousand years of British history. The glorious wars, beheadings, hangings, drawings, quarterings, monarchies, charters, exploration, exploitation, and civilization of what was once the greatest empire on earth.
This was quite fun to read. It's all in little bits and pieces, and reading it is rather like eating potato chips. You're just going to read a chapter. Next thing you know, you've plowed through the book and you're done, but it was quite enjoyable. Lomas is an affable and clever author. He can tell a horrifying story and have you laughing while you're reading it. You needn't be a serious history buff to enjoy, but if you're serious, you'll enjoy it too. Even the youngsters could enjoy this - it's such a pity we don't appreciate history when we're young - but it is graphic and there is some foul language. Nothing that offended me, but worth considering for a young reader.
In fact, I think this would make a lovely gift for anyone who reads. It's lively and engaging, and while the events depicted are at times unsavory, the story telling never falters. Mr. Lomas is not an historian, but he's the author you wish was your history...

Vbf0407: Arran did a very hood job on his first ever publication. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it rekindled my love for reading books again. It has been more than a decade since I read something for entertainment. Yeah life has been busy. It is about history but I never knew history could be so much fun! I absolutely hated when I was a student. I truly hope there would be another book from thoughty2. Definitely a great value for the money.👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
