T. Knight: For this switch to function, it is required that power be run from the switch to the light. If the power comes into the light first, then runs down to the switch, there is no solution to making this work without running additional wire.

I ended up making the light fixture powered 24/7 and then using a second smart switch inside the light fixture to get it to function. However, in this case the second switch in the 3 way will also not function, unless it to is turned into a smart switch and you handle the whole thing through your automation system with a complicated rule. It's not ideal.

That the switch requires the power to be run specifically this way is not really made clear in the product description. It's hinted at in the guide that comes with it, and having spent a lot of time working on it, there does not seem to be a solution that doesn't require me to run new 12/3 to the light switch from the fixture.

Billy Bob: Moved into a new house and the outside terrace lights are controlled by 3 switches (a 4-way setup when you include the lights themselves). I had an electrician come out to look at adding automation so I could control them from anywhere and they wanted to replace all 3 switches with Z-wave ones at $60/each plus 2 hours labor for a total of >$500. I thought it was a waste to replace all switches, but quickly found that there are not many ZWave/Wifi switches that don't require you to replace all the switches - some with "slave" switches.

Ran across this and someone mentioned in a review that they replaced just ONE switch with this and it all worked, so I purchased. While I had to work a bit to find the right switch to replace (tip - it MUST be the first switch in the sequence.... definitely not the second or third, even though the third will look like it should work!), once I found the right switch it was relatively easy to replace it. I did have a different setup than their instruction manual but easily switched a few wires around to find the right sequence.

I now can control the lights while I'm already outside and, added bonus, all of the other switches work as...

Jakked: Bought to replace older Insteon dimmers which flickered when insteon command were being sent on the network.

These Zooz ZEN77 dim perfectly with older 2015 Phillips LED cans.

Only thing left to do now is to work out setting ramp rates and intensity settings.

RaRaRaRa: I got this because the Inovelli blue batch I received from the first one was a dud and I wanted to try the z-wave protocol. Setup was easy for me and I have zwave set up on my server with a dongle. My system picked it up right away. This switch was rock solid (more than Inovelli) and didn't have the same issues with dimming.

I wish I had started with these instead but most of my home is zigbee so I went that route.

Teo's Tips: I've been on the Z-Wave train for quite some time now… roughly 15 years, so I have considerable experience with switches like these. The older GE brand worked well but suffered from lack of development. When Zooz hit the scene, their low cost and high feature offering was well received. I, personally, have at least a dozen Zooz products and, generally, they’re the best bang-for-the-buck on the market right now.

My caveats are:
1) Do not update the firmware! Unless Zooz staff advise you to or you must have a specific feature only available in the latest firmware, I advise you to steer clear of updates. If your update fails (like mine did), Zooz will not replace your product for free. They may offer you a discount, but you’re SOL overall.

2) Be gentle. These switches seem more fragile than their older counterparts. One of my bedroom switches will no longer click when I press the lower half. I tried taking it apart to find the flaw but could not identify the problem. I could call tech support but haven’t found them to be super helpful.

Overall, these switches are good but not great in my opinion. I will continue to purchase them as needed but will...

Amazon Customer: Quick installation, this was not as bulky as some Z-Wave switches I've used. I like the tap-vs-long-tap brightness adjustment. Integrated quickly into my smart home system.

jwdc: Unit needed to be disassembled to free two of the terminal bolts that were cross threaded and frozen causing them to literally rotate their backplate and slightly damage the plastic housing. An easy 5 minute installation turned into an annoying 15 minute fix. After reassembly the product worked great and paired easily with Home Assistant.

Amazon CustomerAmazon Customer: I assume the supply chain issues, semiconductor shortage drove up z wave prices. This was relatively priced well. I have 14 pot lights in basement. Led, like less than 10 watts each. This works with smartthings. Now I don't need to get my butt off sofa. Only complaint... as I was installing it, turning breaker back on, pots were live but in the lowest dim level... to me they looked off. So I assumed wiring was wrong... wasted like 30 min playing with wires only to realize it was working at the beginning. Held up for a few seconds, and boom, lights were working. Odd.

stephane: I gave 4 stars because although I think the product is of quality (and it is regarded a such in the HA community) , I could not install it as my wiring is not compatible with it.

rule of thumb for this product:
->If the power comes to the switch box before getting to the fixture, then install this switch.
->if the power comes to the fixture and is then sent to 2 3-way switches, then this product *will not fit*.

This switch *requires 4 wires at the box*, which was not my case. So I had to return it (thanks for easy returns!) and order an other product that should support 3 wires switch boxes.

My appreciation is that the description is not clear enough (hence 4 stars), and unless you open your boxes and compare with the well redacted documentation before ordering, you might end up with a non compatible product.

So buyers beware!

Mark Johnson: I have installed a number of Zooz paddle type z-wave switches and had great success. I tried this toggle switch because the look fit the location better than a paddle. As always, installation was super easy (check the website for some alternative wiring instructions if your situation, like mine, is not standard). After I got it installed and paired with my z-wave hub (Home Assistant), I noticed the physical switch stopped working. I emailed their support, and as usual, they responded quickly and with a great troubleshooting solution. I guess when I was pairing, I got a bit over zealous and hit the switch up 10 times or so (you know, to make really sure it paired...). This caused it to change a setting that made the physical switch not work. They gave me the solution (flip it 10 times again) a couple hours after I emailed them.
once again, I will say, this is the ONLY brand of Z-Wave switches I will buy. Not only are they easy to install, look great, and seem to have a solid construction, the support that backs these things up is out of this world. Don't bother with other brands! This is the best solution for Z-Wave wall switches.
