Lori Dykes: I really wish this had been in audible but I enjoyed reading the book
Wow what a journey! This is the first that I started having an idea but it was still very intriguing.
I wanted to slap Monk though for his stupid moves on one incident. You will know when you read. He drives me a little nuts at times. But Hester cannot help herself and saves him. Grrr
Anyway I cannot wait to read the next!!

David Kloth: This is another good Monk/Latterly story, well told. I confess I expected the twist at the end, saw it coming a mile away, but didn't know how it would be uncovered. That was the real mystery.
Still, Anne Perry always spins a good yarn, and this is no exception. She's a master of dialog in which vernacular defines the characters and places them within their environment. Her characters feel as if they were alive, and we could talk to them.
This Anne Perry mystery is definitely worth the read. Well, they are all, and I've already started reading the next one in this series.

Crystal Toller: In this book a woman contacts William Monk to find her missing husband who she believes has been murdered by his twin brother. How Monk finds out what happened and the tragedy when the surviving twin is tried makes for a very surprising book. Really surprising ending in this book. Highly recommend this book and the series.

avidreader: The subject matter is very dark in this book, and any details will give the story away - but I will just say that, more so in this than previous books, there were a few humourous moments which lifted the depressing gravity of the subject.
I enjoy each book in this series. The author expresses life and social mores with great clarity, and there are so many areas where her writing about certain subjects makes one realise how rapidly matters have changed - for example, the fact that jurors are all men and have to be property owners, and the fact that Hester, the Crimean nurse, is more or less ignored in most circumstances when men are present, either because they cannot believe that she will have any thing worthwhile to say, or because she is regarded as a servant; there is always incredulity when she is called upon to perform a medical service for someone, because the belief is that only a doctor - and therefore a man - can be competent to do so. Even Monk, who often illustrates that he is not a gentleman born, finds many of her beliefs and assertions 'unladylike' and therefore unlikeable. It all makes for fascinating reading, and I am totally caught up in the series.

elliemay: What a joy to read an author such as Anne Perry and not get fed up with her books. To the contrary the books just keep getting better and better. This book With Monk trying to prove that Caleb murdered his twin Angus by finding Angus's remains, whilst knowing he had a fight with Angus the last time Angus was seen. The conclusion of this book is a real WOW!! and very sad. I even had a tear in my eye when Rathbone says he will conduct the prosecution and a tear fell at the very last sentence said by Monk.
I am not saying anymore about the books because I don't want to spoil it for other readers who may be reading the reviews, I would just say read the book you will not be disappointed.
I am really enjoying these books they are well written and though not glory like other books, these books show how the Victorian policeman (Monk) works out who done it by methodically going through all the clues and threads, and there is no swearing. If you haven't read them then I urge you to start reading. This book is the best yet.

Laura E.: Anne Perry finally hits all the right notes. This is the best book in the series thus far. Monk shows very fallible human characteristics in this one and it gets him into trouble. He acts very shallow at times where women are concerned, flirting just because they're beautiful when deep down he knows Hester is perfect for him. If their relationship can't be jolted out of it's inevitable stall, perhaps Hester should look elsewhere, find someone not just interested in a pretty face and supposed femininity. Not Rathbone, however. I don't know why, but I really don't like the match. I fear I'm going to be disappointed on that score though. Back to Monk. He held Mrs. Stonefield in high regard until meeting Miss Wyndham, then all of a sudden he stoops to engaging in malicious gossip and supposition about Genevieve Stonefield and she drops in his estimation. It's as if he constantly needs to compare the women in his life against one another. That said, what Drusilla Wyndham did to him was deplorable. I wonder if Monk will ever realize just how much Hester helped him and saved his reputation.
The crime was quite complex and I certainly did not see the end coming. Very...
