Keith Black: These work, fundamentally. They sound is okay, but I would not say “thunderous”. They are lightweight and reasonably comfortable.
The tone control and gain seem to change things, but the effects seems to be just a matter of loudness- I can’t discern any appreciable benefit. They are difficult, no, virtually impossible to adjust while wearing because the adjustment dials have a protector ridge, and just small and fiddledy.
I wear mine “backwards” Left side on right ear, because the input wire and the controls are on the Left side. Backwards puts the controls on the same side as the hand I use for bumbling around with poorly laid out equipment, and the wire is less in the way.
Oh, and they hiss quite a lot if you don’t get the bass volume, gain, and headset volume set in some kind of balance. Just fiddledy.
I got these rather than the plug-in headphone amp because they have the aux in, and, I “thought” these would be easier to adjust, rather than fiddledy bits underneath the side of my bass.
Still use these, but are less than ideal.

Denise: A big "thank you" to the blogger who suggested trading out the original batteries for new quality ones. The phones played great for a while then the sound deteriorated to something from the dregs of Pluto. I decided to return the phones, then I remembered the batteries. Changed them out, and perfect sound again! Just me, but I think the bass quality is excellent. It does take some patience to get the dials coordinated between guitar and phones (you have to keep removing the phones to adjust the dials - very annoying). The missing star is for the subtle background hissing that, for some strange reason, isn't all that annoying. As for the complaints regarding short cable from guitar to phones, it is indeed short but actually really is long enough. Psychologically, however, I simply added a short extension cable to it and attached a quarter-inch adapter for my guitar port. Extreme volume does seem to saturate, but it is certainly loud enough at a moderate level where the sound is clean. Bottom line - I still feel funny with everything attached to my head! Cell phone playlist is in my pocket plugged into my head. Guitar is plugged into my head. The 'snake pit' is now at my head...

GC: Though the sound is good for my expectations, I'm disappointed in a few things:
1) The cable you see in the image cannot be removed, it's hardwired. There's no reason it couldn't have been a replaceable 3.5mm cable. If this cable breaks, then the headphones can't be used for guitar/bass playing
2) The cable you can't detach also does not easily wrap around the headphones, they only needed to add a appropriate groove in the plastic on the phones to wrap the wire and attach the end to stem
3) There is a separate 3.5mm aux input on the headphones that I assume is there so you can insert a cable to play while listening to a song on your phone/etc. Though it's nice to have 2 wired inputs, it's more frustrating to have occasionally 2 cables dangling when you only are using 1.
4) my headphones took 2 months+ to ship from japan and I wasn't aware of that delay till I had already ordered. It was delivered much later than the expected shipping date that I originally was given and tracking the package was nowhereland
5) I knew when I purchased that it took 2 batteries. This product should be rechargeable by usb and it would be much more usable as an wireless independant...

James: I wish there were a totally clean (but still amplified) setting, since I sometimes want to plug this not into my bass directly, but into my regular effects unit (while still playing along with my mp3 player via the other input jack); the headphones still colour the sound, though. Having said that, they do a pretty good job on their own. The whole point of this purchase was to be able to hear myself play along with tunes while using headphones, and without a lot of fuss. And they do that. Not perfect but the best of the available options, in my opinion.
On another note, I've recently [January 2018] learned that this product seems to be going out of stock at a lot of places, so anyone looking to buy a pair should check to see if either there's some new improved product coming out soon, or else this is it for the foreseeable future and you should grab them while you can. (Of course I could be wrong; check for yourself.)

Dreamer_01: Yesterday I gave this product one star but now i think i have been too harsh about it. I was angry because the cord was too short but I found out that you can buy an extension cord for 5 bucks to fix it. This will still take away the 1 star because it's extra money and it still is a big mistake for me. Plus I don't even know if extrension cord will mess the sound up yet.
Btw, I really like the effect option. It puts a sweet overdrive tone and it made me really happy since my amp doesn't haven overdrive circuit. Without the effect the sound is good as well. When you listen to an mp3 it smoothly enhances the bass. You can hear the bass lines much easier.
The guide is a little bad the battery beds are inside the red cover on the right. Don't ever mess with the soft pads its extremely hard to put them back on.

Christopher inman: These arrived several days ago. I have used them with my 4-string Squier Jaguar and 6-string Ibanez. I have flatwounds on both and want as flat and clean a sound a possible. I like the sound from these Vox Amphonebass headphones. It is acceptable down to the low B and a real pleasure above. Well worth the price. And I don't wake the neighbors. Also, while there is an aux input, regular speakers come through sufficiently to allow transcribing without turning player speaker volume too high. Ordinarily that lack of insulation would be a minus on phones, but in this case it is a definite plus; these phones aren't for isolation but practice in a quiet environment. Comfortable over the ears.
It is now Nov 24, so I've been using them for two weeks and just now ran into what I thought might be a problem. Either my pick-ups were misbehaving or the preamp was. Since I had read the review by the person who had three malfunctioning units in a row, I thought I should edit my review: The phones are fine, still as good a I found them before; the problem was the batteries. To be thorough, I went and bought new batteries dispite normally using my own rechargables and that totally eliminated...

Stephen Thompson: This type of product is indispensable for bass guitar players who, like myself, must practice a lot! I bought this originally because the Vox bass amplug would not fit into my Ibanez bass. By the way I should have read the Amazon review which noted this problem! I spent a considerable amount of time and effort emailing Vox about the problem and did not even receive the courtesy of a reply. I thought that the Vox Amphonesbass headphone would solve the problem . It did not! Even though the 1/4 inch probe just goes into the Ibanez jack ( which in my bass and many other Ibanez guitars is on the front face of the guitar) in order to remove it you have to yank on the cord. The Vox manual ( that came with the headphone) specifically says don't do this. Thus, if you have an Ibanez bass don't buy this product. Now for the rest of the review. I totally agree with all of the points brought up by the other reviewers; i.e.the controls (volume, tone etc.) are placed in a ridiculous position, the cord is cheap and short, and even though the headphone is light the plastic is thin and the battery compartment cover falls off every time I use it. One important point that nobody has brought up is that...
