Steve Ullrich: We purchased this French press coffee maker to pack with us on an upcoming sailing excursion. We will have a LPG stove but no electricity so an electric coffee maker isn't an option. We made several cups to make sure of the recipe. We ended up liking three tablespoons of grounds in 16oz of hot water. We are basing our recipe on a bottle of water just to keep it simple. Anything less was too weak, another tablespoon full of ground coffee might be even better if you like stronger coffee. It works very well.

I was a little surprised to see how small a 20oz French press really is but it is large enough to brew two cups of coffee... or one large mug. The filter system works very well, and it came with an extra set of filter screens so that was nice. The filter system has to be disassembled and cleaned before you put it away. You can rinse out the grounds and reload to make coffee for several people without cleaning it, just don't put it away without cleaning it. Coffee oils go rancid much quicker than you might expect.

Neil V.: I was originally quite impressed with the product but within three weeks the rubber gasket the holds the plunger and cover together broke. Now the cover just flops over when you are putting it in. Poorly engineered.

Alexander Swift: I've made about a hundred cups of coffee in one of these and so it's time to give it a review.

This review assumes that you a) are buying this with the expectation of making one cup of coffee at a time, and
b) have decided that a French press is for you.

Usability: Five stars. It's about as simple to use as a French Press can be - which is pretty doggone simple. Serves up to ~12 ounces. Only small amounts of sediment escape the filter with typical pre-ground coffees. I haven't replaced my filter yet, and have seen no change in performance.
Cleaning is straightforward enough. Rinse well with tap water, put away not more than damp, use a little soap (or vinegar, if your water is hard) every week or so to keep it sparkly.

Durability: Three stars. This is a small, medium-built press with a glass container. Don't let it knock about when you're on the road or have it in a box. Don't wave it about when cleaning it - crack it against the sink, and it's done. Don't use a metal thing to stir your coffee. Basically, be mindful that this is a small glass object, and you'll do just fine. Someone who doesn't break china or glasses too often probably won't break this...

AshleyAshley: Do you want to brew coffee at home, but want to get more hands-on than a Keurig? Are you too broke for an espresso machine, but have enough disposable income for whole beans? The French Press is for you!

I've been working with coffee for years (former barista here) and drink it daily. I only recently started a homebrewing set-up, though, and wanted to try grinding whole beans. The French Press caught my eye for boasting a stronger body than drip coffee, with stronger flavor, to boot. I'm happy to say that it very much lives up to the hype as a classic coffeemaker. I've since bought a pourover, too, and can confidently say the coffee that comes out of a French Press is thicker and a little creamier.

Don't be fooled by the fancy design: it's very easy to use and clean. Just grind up your beans, dose and steep. Remember that the coarser the grind, the better the extraction (save the medium-fine for a pourover and the fine for espresso). I rinse mine off once it's done and pat it dry. It comes with extra filters to swap out, too. It's been a few months since my purchase and I haven't seen any peeling, rusting, leaking, staining or cracking, which means I got a good...
