Julia: I guess I didn't read the part that said hand wash only not dishwasher safe! It gave the impression it was stainless steel, but only the wires are steel. It is not stainless steel, but chrome plated something or other and as mentioned in an earlier review with a photo attached all the chrome washed off the first time I washed it (in the dishwasher) and it was all black and smutty when it came out and left black sooty stains all over my hands. I threw it away. What use is a kitchen item that is NOT dishwasher safe! Buy a plastic one instead, by a well known maker, this is a piece of junk.

Ryan H.: I was originally looking for a tomato slicer when I purchased this product. I was very unhappy when I found out I could not use it for tomatoes but I decided not to waste it and started using it for my eggs for my salads. I now have professionally sliced eggs for my salads. Hooray.

Kathy D:
I just ordered my second one of these metal egg slicers, after the first one lost its wires on a "rubbery" hard boiled egg.
But in its defense, this happened after 5 years of flawless service. I would not have even reviewed it were it not for the many reviews complaining about the slicer not being dishwasher safe. In the roughly 30 years since I started using egg slicers and had a dishwasher available, it never once occurred to me to put one in the dishwasher for cleaning. Not the yellow plastic kind, not the so-called "restaurant quality" ones, not this one.
Seriously, folks, slice your eggs, rinse off the slicer, use a soft bottle brush to clean the wires, and put it in the drainer. It takes less than 1 minute to accomplish this task. It's dry and back in the drawer, ready for its next use, before your dishwasher is even full. (Not to mention the hour-plus use of water and electricity.)
To slice eggs, you can lay the egg down either lengthwise or crosswise. I have used it for white mushrooms, and it's "ok" but since I never use just one mushroom, it is much easier to slice a bunch of mushrooms using a knife. And, don't wash your mushrooms until you...

Paul & Jessica: My husband takes lunches to work every week day and so there are a lot of salads and sandwiches being made in this house. Boiled eggs are a healthy way to add protein to his lunches but its a pain to cut them up with a knife (knife, cutting board and little crumby bits every where make for more cleaning than I want!) but this is simple to use and lets me make egg salad or sliced egg as often as he wants without the mess on my counter tops before bed every evening. Also, I like the metal construction because it will last much longer than flimsy plastic ones found in stores which are generally much more expensive than what I paid for this one.
