srogas: Chad Bird is truly a modern day Lutheran scholar. His words are insightful. They unlock Christ in the Old Testament. This book has become a part of my daily devotional life. It will remain that way for a long time. Thank you, Chad Bird.

Bruce Baker: Chad's book is a sound and rich guide to the Scriptures. It is playful, enjoyable to read, and academically sound. The content is great and you'll gain some helpful hermeneutic sensibilities along the way. Most daily devotionals teach people to read the bible at a shallow, individualistic, and simplistic manner. Chad's work here is an antidote to such "resources."

Amazon Customer: It’s like peaking through the keyhole into the treasure house of the Hebrew Scriptures and being dazzled by the beauty of the scriptures as originally received.

Mikalina:
There is little Christology (if any) in this book which makes it unsuitable for a devotion - one normal thinks of 'a word' which directs one's thoughts to God through His Son by the Power of the Holy Spirit. I would suspect that Christology was not high on the list of subjects at the Reformed Jewish college from which he obtain his Masters - not really a qualification which confers a 'scholar' or 'expert' status. I found nothing in the book that was not obtainable on biblehub.org.
Translation is interpretation and rather than highlight the 'scarlet thread' which our Lord taught on the road to Emmaus of Himself in all the scriptures, the idiosyncratic choices of the author deconstruct that thread. Not surprising, as the author calls the relationship between the OT and the NT 'intertextuality' - a good postmodern term. A further revelation of his 'leanings' is his recommendation of N T Wright.
A more reliable and fun way to look at Hebrew is by learning it yourself. I would recommend Rev. John H Dobson's Learning Biblical Hebrew. Really easy and accessible and Word and Christ centred.
(Two stars for the opportunity to exercise my spirit...

D & J Morin: Since Bible is from the Jewish point of view but writing in Greek thought process . There are many things that , being English, is not easy to understand. point of view changes with culture. There are passages I have read my whole life and thought I understood ( some explained by preachers) after reading this book... I see many things that were missed or glossed over for not knowing its importance . The bible is the living word, and this book is another tool to open our thinking so we can learn more . Perspective is everything and its not ours that count when reading something written from another culture .
