Denise: This was an informative and interesting read. The first chapter was pretty standard in self help type books with loads of information to “define” willpower, what it means, etc.
I found ch 2 particularly interesting as it focused on the HALT Paradigm, which I had never heard of before. It is a very useful acronym for common ways we lose our willpower (hungry, angry, loneliness, and tired). This is most helpful when working on strengthening willpower, by recognizing what is making you HALT.
This book goes deep into the psychological deterrents to willpower, including emotions, dysfunctional thinking, etc. and ways to combat them.
I appreciated the deeper focus in ch 5 regarding immediate gratification vs delayed gratification and how they affect our willpower. It is so true that today’s society has created many immediate gratification opportunities (food, money, etc) and trains our brains to look for the easy fix vs longer-term, more difficult gains (savings, debt-free, career, etc.).
A good portion of this book deals with goal setting, changing by or forming habits, emotional awareness, etc. I liked to section that referred to stacking good habits....
