Z6: I had a request from my daughter for this book back in the summer and forgot about it until she and her children went on vacation and came back to pipes burst from tree roots in her bathroom and a flooded nasty mess. School was beginning and so many of her things were ruined then the worst hit when she and my granddaughter both contracted Covid-19. They were living in a suite at a hotel not far from us but we were not allowed to help her and my grandson was tested 3 times before he was allowed to stay with us not having it. I have an immune disorder and they were worried about me. Anyway my granddaughter had a mild case but my daughter was very very ill. We were frightened and she is a 7th & 8th grade Science teacher who goes above the norm to help her students. So I remembered and immediately ordered this book so she could plan great things for her students and encourage her to fight. After she finally received the infusion she began to turn for the better and with the encouragement of a great support system with her principal and fellow teachers not forgetting her students she went back upon release and the book will always be a favorite.

gb: This is what happens when people who dream of being in the showbiz end up being teachers, and confuse educating children with
entertaining them.
The arrogant, boastful attitude of the writer, his "I am the kids favorite and you'd better know it!" style of rants offer very-very little
applicable advice, and mainly just showy and flashy anecdotes of how HIS classes are so amazing that he "could sell tickets to them."
His stories end without a conclusion, there are, for example, pages long rants about how awesome his class is, then it all ends with
something like "you gotta have passion for teaching!" and that is all. At the end of the book there actually is a list of things that could be
useful, but these just questions that could be picked up from ANY active learning material, for example "does your class involve the students completely?", or "can you somehow incorporate dancing and singing into your lesson?" etc. Again, there are no answers or suggestions to
these topics, just the questions themselves. A cynical drawing of a gold coin is used as bullet point marker for each question, as if the author
was taunting and teasing the reader by giving him the...

hanaz: As someone who left teacher training part way through due to things like being a perfectionist, hearing negativity from colleagues and from the media, I am so glad to have come across this book. There are great checklists you can use to make lessons more engaging/ varied and useful advice for teachers at any stage. I hope to go back and try again soon (partly thanks to this book). Great job Dave!

BigSur: This review may not be popular, but it is honest. I was disappointed and underwhelmed overall with this book. I have taught elementary school for over 20 years and am passionate about what I do, and I'm always looking for new ideas to mix things up, and when I caught wind of this book I thought, why not? So many positive reviews, let's give it a shot. First of all, I would love for any of my kids to be in Dave's class, he is obviously a passionate and creative teacher! However, I felt like this book spent way too much time on generalities and not enough on specifics, and it really reads like a self-help book for fragile and discouraged teachers. Plus, much of his advice is pretty obvious--you should be passionate? Of course. You should have rapport with your students? Isn't that obvious? You should be enthusiastic? I HOPE SO!
His middle section on "hooks" WAS interesting and there were a few things I had not thought of much before, so I will probably use a few ideas from there. But the first section and the third section of the book contains too much "fluff." I believe the book could have been much better with those sections shortened and the middle section expanded (some...
