Tennesse GirlTennesse Girl: I was happy to receive the book earlier than other options. However, as you can see the condition was not the best and the book has yellow pages. I will keep it.

Huddy: Well-written book by Alicia Britt Chole! Explains the basic origination of Lent which has been dictated more by religion and not from Jesus. Jesus did explain fasting and how it had to do with His absence in bodily form here on earth. Jesus did not say to specifically fast before celebrating His resurrection - Easter Sunday. Alicia's book speaks more of fasting thoughts, actions, food, etc. Regarding these individual things is, if any take our self away from Jesus being front and center in our lives, we should abstain (fast) from them. She happen to write this to start 40 days before Easter but can be done at any time. I really liked her approach to it all. By the way, she isn't condemning the Lenten fast, she's offering another alternative, more personal approach to fasting to grow closer to Christ with ourself- importance decreasing and Christ' importance increasing in each of our lives. Totally recommend reading this book! Nana Jo

I don't usually write reviews simply because I don't usually know what to say. However. I have been moved for days to need to write something regarding this outstanding book.
I was raised in a somewhat "Christian home", I am a Social Worker of 30 years, a firm believer in the 12 steps as a recovery tool, a firm believer in the power of spirituality and how God changes lives. I don't know that I actually devoted my life to Christ until two years ago through a series of events at age 54. This year I really wanted Easter and Lent to have special meaning and had prayed that God/Jesus would lead me to something that would assist me in this desire. I looked through a series of different devotionals and was led to 40 Days of Decrease by Alicia Britt Chole. One of the first things I had noted was that Alicia was originally a devout atheist. I read several reviews and was led to believe that this book was the one that God wanted me to read. After reading it I have no doubt that it was.
Alicia's style of writing is superb, her daily writings were beyond sensational as they increased my knowledge and understanding. However, as a Social Worker/therapist her...

It’s not often that I hear the word decrease and think, yep that is what I want (unless of course it is regarding my weight.) But this book makes me long for more of Him, Our Lord, and less of me.
Decreasing the many things this world has tricked us into thinking are just normal everyday life and increasing Christ-like character in me.
Alicia’s words of encouragement can from a place of honestly and real life. Here is just an example of the teaching which ministered to my soul. “And in the midst of Jesus journey, He felt troubled. Clearly, then a troubled soul is not always the sign of a faith deficit. A troubled soul is sometimes the signature of obedience-in-the-making.” (Alicia Britt Chole)
Fasting is another of those concepts which does not have great appeal to me. But the fasts which Alicia challenges us with throughout this book has made the thought of fasting something I look forward to each day. Fasting: speeding past sorrow, isolation, discontentment, willful sin and withholding brought about change in my soul. I challenge you to read this book and not be changed. I am not sure how it could be done.
I love the format of the...
