Nat: Bought for grandson who’s always asking questions about cars and how they work. Having a sneaky read and have learnt a lot!
Colourful, well presented and accessible format - great buy.

p.s.: I gave this book a quick flip through and was impressed by the amount of information that it contains. I think anyone who might have an interest in cars and how they work, from curious eight year olds to adults, would benefit from reading it. There is a lot of text mixed with colorful illustrations on each page.

Jennifer Kessler: My 5-year-old car enthusiast's favorite book. He requests that I read it to him almost daily since we got it 2 months ago. I enjoy it too - lots of neat science with an engaging presentation. Would work for early elementary through teens or even adults interested in cars. The reading level is teens or adult.

Harriet Wallis: I bought this book because I wanted to have a better understanding of how my car work. I tried to ask my brother, but got nowhere!
I bought a book aimed at adults, but it was too technical- I needed something that started at the very beginning.
This is a large and fills my lap, it has easy to read font and bright big pictures. I feel it would make a ideal presents for kids interested in cars. And is a good way for parents to explain how their own cars work to their kids!
I book covers in brief all the science involves in the design and running of a car in simple language and uses pictures to explain processes clearly. Since reading the book (missed some pages) I now have a clearer understanding of the technology is use in my own car. And I am proud to say a better understanding when my car failed its MOT.
It covers the development of cars from the beginning, how different fuels are manufactured from crude oil, how steering systems work.
The pictures make it easy to understand - gears, steering system and how the engine works.
Its full of car facts, makes physics accessible (the importance of forces and friction)
It has a range of classic...

Mr. N. P. House: Another great DK book packed full of information and images.
This one is about cars in which I generally have absolutely no interest - except this was about car science and I was hooked at where the two subjects converge.
I knew the basics of how an internal combustion engine worked, but I had never connected a piston to a crankshaft or considered how this made the wheels go round.
Then to find out about the different numbers of pistons and their arrangement in an engine (from 1 in a lawnmower up to the V8 of the Aston Martin) was all very interesting and enlightening.
I already knew the origin of fossil fuels - but then the crude oil was separated into its various components for me
We started talking physics of aerodynamics, velocity, terminal velocity, friction, acceleration, centrifugal force, gravity and how these can apply to situations like turning corners, breaking, skidding and how an F1 car works and the driver is protected.
This really is a very interesting book and despite other reviewers saying they have bought it for ten year old kids I would love to have a smaller edition of this for my own book shelf (I bought this large book as a gift).

Kate Coombs: Leave it to DK Publishing (of Eyewitness Books fame) to create something this cool! Yes, it's the one boys ages 7-13 have been waiting for: a reader-friendly book about cars.
Car Science is divided into four sections. The first is Power. My favorite spread in this section is "Making gasoline," but the part about gears is also fascinating, as is "Bugatti Veyron," about a car with 1001-brake horsepower, which means it can go from 249 mph to a stop in under 10 seconds.
Section 2 is Speed. It begins with a colorful chart comparing the speeds of different animals and vehicles, from a snail's .03 mph to the Thrust SSC's land-speed record of 763 mph. I also liked finding out how something as odd as a boxfish could give designers an idea for the shape of a car in "Inspired by Nature."
Section 3 addresses Handling. My favorite spread title here is "Wall of Death," with "Monster Trucks" and "Car-crash Science" tied for second.
Section 4, Technology, starts off by explaining what cars are made of, moving on to topics like scuba cars before ending happily with "Top 10 Crazy Ideas."
Car Science is written at about a 3rd grade level, but its appeal is much...
