jwgarvey: This book, and the (free!) on-line course are just amazing. I'm a true beginner--I recently started drawing and coloring with my 5 year old niece, and enjoyed it so much I decided to do more. I've ordered many, many books, and this is my favorite. I actually feel like I can draw now! And I'm getting better all the time. One tip--if you struggle, as I have, with making certain shapes, trying tracing them several times to practice. That really helped me progress faster.

I stumbled upon Johanna Basford’s How to Draw Inky Wonderlands and was captivated by the simple and beautiful line drawings and even more excited by the no-skills-needed to achieve this because I had none! I hopped onto Johanna Basford’s website and saw that she had links to tutorials and videos on YouTube. It was like striking gold. On there she has The Inky Art School Course where she goes step-by-step through her drawing process with tips and tricks along the way. She explains that drawing isn’t s talent, it’s a skill. A learnt process that with practice gets better. I found watching Johanna Basford hand draw on the tutorials useful for improving my technique which enabled me to tackle the projects in the book with more confidence. I now even look at flowers in a different way, the petals, the stems, the leaves, I see details in them that I didn’t see before. Bar.Bar.: I bought this book for the promise of its clearly broken-down drawing instructions in styles that I didn't use much myself.
On that the book delivers quite well as Johanna breaks down the images into easily accomplished stages for you to complete.
The book itself is high quality in terms of its presentation, which is beautiful, and the printing and you could, if that is your thing, also use it as a colouring book as there are examples pages which invite that.

I used it when I was struggling for inspiration for drawing ideas to then colour and use in a colour pencil review (see photo) and although I can draw fairly well (not calling myself an artist though) I nevertheless enjoyed following Johanna's instructions for the birds and boat.

Although there are a decent number of pages my main issue with this book is the lack of scope in it. There are natural elements (birds fish, plants etc.) which I guess predominate in her colouring books, but no human figures, dogs, buildings, cars or anything else so it should not be seen as a normal 'how to draw' book, which is sort of how she markets it - albeit as a novel one. You will of course learn some basic drawing skills...

EstherEsther: The media could not be loaded.  Me encanta el libro. Te explica paso a paso de una forma muy sencilla y fácil de entender como dibujar. Te lo hace tan fácil, te motiva... y te da mucha confianza y te asombras de lo que llegas a hacer. Yo no sabía dibujar nada... y ahora estoy asombrada de todo lo que estoy aprendiendo y consiguiendo hacer.
El libro está divido en 3 temas de dibujos: Jardín ,Océano y Bosque. En cada tema te enseña a dibujar ciertos elementos de cada temática y te anima a que crees tus propias variaciones. Yo de verdad que me asombro de llegar a crear mis propios diseños sin saber dibujar! Bueno, gracias a Johanna Basford ahora se un poco, jejjej.
Resaltaría como dato importante para quien quiera comprar el libro y aprender a dibujar que es importante (ella misma te lo aconseja en las primera páginas) que tengas papel para practicar fuera del libro, lápiz, goma, y rotuladores fineliners. Como ella dice: ¡primero lápiz y luego tinta! Y su formula secreta: Imaginación x Practica = Dibujo. ¡Así que todos podemos dibujar!!

Senior is a State of Mind: Johanna Basford most recent publication is a hands on introduction on how to draw basic line art elements like those in her wonderful whimsical coloring books. It is a practical guide showing the strokes to create simple motifs useful for adding your personal touch in her books or creating your own coloring designs to embellish greeting cards, thank you notes or anywhere a simple motif will enhance a communication.

The book is separated into 3 sections: Garden, Ocean, and Forest. Each section shows step-by-step how to for objects found in those environments. My only disappointment is that the pages are not numbered nor is there an index.

The Garden Section shows how to draw leaves, blooms, flowers, insects, etc. Also included are borders, bouquets, garlands and spherical motifs.

The Ocean introduces simple fishes, and more complex ones, boats, undersea flora - seaweeds and coral, flotsam and jetsam, and found objects such as pirates treasure and shells . Also included are underwater critters: crabs, jellyfish, and a fantasy lobster.

The Forest Section continues with more items found on the forest floor: fallen leaves, ferns, wildflowers, pine cones,...
