Nina Szewczak: "Just Listen: Discover the Secret to Getting Through to Absolutely Anyone," is a very insightful and practical guide to improving our communication skills and building better connections with others.
Dr Mark's approach is straightforward and devoid of complex jargon, making it accessible to a wide range of readers whilst emphasizing the importance of active listening and empathy, through setting aside our own agendas and truly engaging with others.
Dr Mark's ability to convey his ideas through real-life examples and compelling stories is seriously top notch and these anecdotes not only illustrate the power of effective listening but also serve as reminders of the impact our words and actions can have on those around us! The book will keep you engrossed and eager to apply the lessons immediately (a sign of an excellent book indeed!).
Mark presents a variety of techniques throughout the book, each designed to address different communication challenges. PAL is super helpful...and I'm excited for the L evolving into Learning now too ;)

Maryse Lepage: I got this book to deepen my understanding of what "true" listening is about and for techniques to expand my skills. I got a lot more than expected: dealing with highly charged situations, with narcissistic personalities, building trust, networking, team building - and a good dose of self-management.
Mark Goulston is generous and wise and an excellent teacher. Approaches and techniques he shares are not just band-aid tricks - they require a good understanding of human nature, a authentic desire for better relationships and the discipline of practice.
Highly recommended for coaches.

Tabea Rehge: That‘s the book I‘ve been waiting for 2 years… During a time where I was really frustrated with my job and especially with my boss, so that I was just one blink away from quitting my job, I received a recommendation from a person that I truly value. I read this book and Dr. Goulstons advice instantly helped me to stop complaining about my situation and instead changing my perspective to significantly improve the relationship to my boss.
I have to admit that I still need some time to practice it in private life with my kids. Seems that I‘m a badass from time to time…
I already presented this book to colleagues and friends, when I feel this could be helpful for them as well. Unfortunately, it is only available in English (not German). So, I have to write an extract for my best friend in German. ;-)
Nevertheless, it is a great book, that I would like to recommend to everyone, dealing with complicated situations / people!
A Power Thank You to Dr. Mark Goulston for his help /advice and for changing my life to the better!

G. Miller: I've always been better at 'telling' than listening. In fact I was listening impaired until my late 40's - so much so that my inability to listen nearly destroyed my most important relationships. No, I'm not going to credit Mark Goulston's "Just Listen" with saving my marriage, but I will credit Mark's book with helping me understand and develop the emotional intelligence to be more empathetic with others and with myself.
"Just Listen" starts out with a brief explanation of brain physiology, a model about how persuasion works and the idea of "buy-in" supported by emotionally moving anecdotal examples of how theory comes alive in practice. Mark introduces the important idea of 'mirror neuron receptor deficit' and how it affects our emotions and is the key for understanding how to listen effectively.
I find Chapter 1, "Who's Holding You Hostage" one of the more powerful chapters in the book because it taps into an experience most people have had at some point in their lives - finding themselves 'held hostage' by the perception that no one understands us or can relate to the emotions we feel. These experiences don't always end in a literal gun-to-your-head standoff, but...

O. Halabieh: As the title indicates this book is about discovering "the secret to getting through to absolutely anyone". In this book Mark presents what he calls the "Persuasion Cycle". He argues that all successful communications move through the steps of this cycle, from beginning to end. The stages are:
-From resisting to listening
-From listening to considering
-From considering to willing to do
-From willing to do to doing
-From doing to glad they did and continuing to do
The book then goes on to introduce rules and techniques that can be leveraged to move people through the different stages of this cycle. Section II of the book details the nine core rules: move yourself from "OH F#@& to OK", rewire yourself to listen, make the other person feel "felt", be more interested than interesting, make people feel valuable, help people to exhale emotionally and mentally, check your dissonance at the door, when all seems lost - bare your neck, steer clear of toxic people.
Section III introduces techniques that can utilized to "achieve buy-in and get through": the impossibility question, the magic paradox, the empathy jolt, the reverse play,...
