Jeff J.: I had a Coolibar hat which I have worn for many years. It blocked the sun and covered me well. It was a bit tight on my so called big head, however, because of that it did not fly anywhere even in the strongest of winds. You might be thinking this guy is reviewing the wrong hat, however, that is not true my friends. To be outright honest, I have had melanoma and wanted as much protection as I could muster from a sun hat.

I bring up the Coolibar hat to say I saw this sun hat and it looked like it would cover me much better. I could tell the brim on this Booney hat was not as stiff as the Coolibar so I wondered how it would hold up in strong winds. I figured for the price what could I lose.

I took the Booney hat for a test drive at Ocean City, NJ. The first day was extremely hot, sunny and very windy. I had read the reviews about using the chin strap in windy conditions and I did just that. The hat offered superb protection from the sun and I will say even better than the Coolibar hat. I had to use the chin strap during the day otherwise the Booney hat would have flow off my head. No problem with the chin strap at all. The strap kept the hat secure...

Eliot Prescott: You won't win any fashion awards in this hat, but you also won't get sunburned. The hat has a preternaturally wide brim that keeps the sun off your face, ears, and neck. The brim curves down slightly, in a sort of conical shape. I found that this shape works much better than typical flat, sombrero-style hats, since the shape keeps the front brim from flipping up in the wind. The brim is also a bit thicker and stiffer than my flat kayaking hat, which also helps in the wind. The fabric is a very soft and comfortable synthetic. I've always been a fan of cotton hats, but I like how quickly this fabric dries. I've also tried hats with rear flaps to protect my neck, but I've found them to be uncomfortably hot in the Florida sun. Same for soft-brim boonies where the brim flops down against my head. For walks on the beach, this hat is the best I've found (after trying half a dozen different models over as many years), and at a very good price. Heavy Muscle: This hat is all you can ask for if your going to stay in sunny conditions for a long period of time. It's light, breathable with two visible side vents, and stylish. If you got a fairly big head (mine is measured 23 1/8 inch circumference) this hat will really do wonders for making your head appear small because the brim is wide. I was outdoors watching an all day sporting event in sunny 88 degree weather last weekend. Moisture does not stay on this thing. This hat provided great shade from the sun and got compliments from two women! Money well spent. No issues whatsoever. Clean is easy in the hand wash option cycle of a modern washing machine and then air drying.
