J. Fitzgerald: This is new - no creases or edge bends. I bought for a Christmas present for husband's family, so can't wait for them to open it.

William R.: Rather than concentrate on the battles of the revolutionary war, Ellis spends his time delving into the thinking of the people involved, both in the u.s. and in England. I came away with a completely different perspective on the Howe’s and what they were trying to accomplish. In high school we are taught that they rather bungled things, but there was indeed a method to their “madness”. Also the lack of a national perspective after the war was eye-opening for me. I highly recommend.

James Kohl: I found fascinating the coverage in this book of how the war came about, how George the Third’s and Britain’s change in outlook concerning its colonies (thinking of them as part of an empire), begun in 1763 and continued thereafter, forced those colonies toward revolt. How the attitudes of George Washington, various leaders of the British and the Americans, the soldiers, the militia, and the common people, all played a role affecting events, as the war developed and progressed, is well covered and helps the reader to understand what was happening.

Phil Degnan: As is usual for Mr. Ellis, he brings a thoughtful approach to the revolutionary war and a new perspective to the period before the constitutional convention. The interregnum has always been a murky period to me and although he does not cover that period specifically in the book his description of the immediate postwar period goes a long way in explaining why we lurched along as a confederation prior to adopting the constitution. Highly recommended.

Amazon Customer: We've waited It's taken nearly 250 years. Eccles' lifetime of study, years for historians to break out of ideological cant and come to comprehend our Revolution for what it was to those who who made it. Far from a conventional narrative account, Eccles' book is a penetrating assessment that addresses
the principal events of the years 1756 -1791 and definitively explains what the struggle was at its core about. In doing so he has provided an explanation of the political-social-cultural divisions that have wrenched our society and politics right up to the present. Among other things he has examined closely regional, racial, political and social influences That created not only the tensions that overturned the Articles of Confederation, the depth of racial divisions that we might have abolished with one heroic decision left unmade in 1790, and the push-pull of localism and a nation vision that continue to vex us. He has done these things, by the way illuminating the roots of divisions between those who even today grasp a national view as opposed to those still too weak-eyed to even be aware that their stubborn localism is, with racism, the greatest threat to our "experiment in...
