Lou McGoo: Recommended as a part of “Oh Freedom!” K-2 Black history curriculum. EXCELLENT book for parents AND littles! Love the design, great photos, enough information for parents but not too much for little kids. Excellent!

Heather Chaney: I opened this book at our school’s library, and after flipping through it I was THRILLED it had been made! I immediately ordered it for my 5th grade classroom. It does an excellent job providing accurate history that isn’t written by white people trying to sell textbooks. As with my own created curriculum, the book starts with African Kingdoms. Great timelines, images and more. Buy two of you can, and give one to a teacher! ❤️

Tiffany823: Purchased this book to read it with my eight year old son so that he will know the real history vs. the watered down history being taught. Perfect book to add to our collection of Black History books. Easy to read so much so, he has read a good bit of it on his own. Your kiddo will likely have lots of questions, as they read, as a parent you are their first teacher so teach them what educators won't and use this book as part of that education.

Me: It's a nicely presented book but I'm not sure which age group it's best suited for. What I mean is, the much younger ones might not have taken interest in this material and yet it's presented in a fairly snapshot way that would appeal to a younger reader, perhaps under 5s (depending on how much your kids like to read, of course), where as the older readers 7/8 years old+ might find this a bit brief and short on content. Both my kids have looked at it (6 and 8) but I don't think they really got into it.

Brownbill: I bought this book for my kids for Christmas. When it arrived I found myself sucked into its pages and read it from cover to cover before I wrapped it up for my children.
I’m a big history fan and I like to read about activism and areas of history that are less well discussed in the mainstream. There was a lot of this in this book which was great. The only downside was that I was really keen to learn more about African nations pre colonisation. Although there was some of that, I would have preferred more. I also felt that there was a heavy emphasis on US history. While this is interesting, out if all of the black history we hear about, this is the area that typically features most in the mainstream. I wanted to hear more about eg Nanny of the Maroons, African queens and the Haitian uprisings. These subjects are covered - but I just wanted more info. All in all this is a great book and I highly recommend it.
