CJ Wallington: an unknown part of our national history that should be read by everyone. well written, in a narrative style so it's not "dry history". I've recommended it to friends and they've all agreed that it's a good book.

Robert: There is a lot of good info in this book and I have already learned some new things from it, but I have yet to finish it. I have never written a review before a book is finished, but in this case I will make an exception. The chapters are short, and as I am just about to get interested in the story, a chapter ends and we pick up the same story from a different viewpoint. There's a lot of flashing back and forward in time. The chapter endings often end with a tease of what you might learn in the next chapter. I don't like this style, especially in a historical narrative. I find it distracting. I do believe that its worth slogging through, as I am a history buff and anything from this period is worth knowing. I will finish it, but I can't say its an enjoyable read.

jkobi2011: I have read a great deal about the period of the commencement of the AMERICAN REPUBLIC both the creation of the organs of statehood and in those accounts GEORGE WASHINGTON is portrayed as the dogged general. English historical accounts tend to show that public opinion was divided with a great deal of support for the colonists. Benjamin Franklin had been living in London and had very important friends in Parliament. Meltzer is excellent in covering the background to the conspiracy surrounding GEORGE WASHINGTON and the execution of HICKEY. Where the book falls is MELTZER'S speculation as to what would have been the fate of GEORGE WASHINGTON had the conspiracy succeeded. The last chapters did not work for me. MELTZER could have written more about the HOWE brothers instead of stuff about TRYON AND MATTHEWS PARKS..

Mark Luebker: This is a fascinating story, one I knew nothing about, that’s well worth reading. Meltzer and Mensch are, for the most part, excellent storytellers. But there were three things—mostly having to do with the editing and how the Kindle version was put together—that irked me:
1) The flow between chapters and repetition of material was awkward. I know it’s common in comic books to summarize “the story so far” in each new issue and that after a commercial break on TV documentaries there’s often a quick recap of where we left off. But I don’t think it’s necessary in a book to tell the reader from one chapter to the next what they just read a few seconds earlier. Yes, it can be useful when picking up a thread from a few chapters ago, but not when the narrative continues directly from one chapter to the next. There also was a lot of verbatim (or nearly so) repetition of quoted material and other exposition throughout the book—things like “put a bundle of paper money into his hands.”
2) “Comprise” means contain. The whole comprises the parts. A thing is not “comprised of” other things, it would be “composed of” other things. Throughout the...

Victoria: This book was a pleasure to read! Lots of historical, factual details… which made the historical figure of George Washington come alive too. Scary to think how the American Revolution would have probably failed if they had succeeded in their plot to either kidnap or kill him,
