H.P.J.M.: Charles Wheelan has done a great job here.

There are so many dull statistics resources out there that start with a formula, use a cliched example, and don't explain the intuition behind the principles or how they inter-relate or relate to the real world.

This book is the polar opposite. Wheelan explains a problem or a phenomenon, normally an interesting one that isn't contrived, and then shows how stats and probability can help us understand it.

Some of the issues discussed are:
- Using standard error and confidence intervals to explain why political polls can be highly accurate
- Using regression analysis to explain why some UK civil servants might be at risk of health problems
- How Netflix and Target use statistical inferences for recommending stuff

On top of that there are some brain teasers in here (like the Monty Hall problem) and nuanced discussions of how some people misuse statistics (even unintentionally) leading to bad results.

This book connected a lot of dots for me because it brings together the concepts in a very integrated way.

The writing is extremely clear, and often funny and self-deprecating. It gets at the...

Everyone should buy and read this book. The book will change your life for good as it changed mine.I love this book because it gives a practical introduction to statistics with lots of relevant examples to drive home the points. This is a book I will read over and over without getting bored. Everyone should buy and read this book. The book will change your life for good as it changed mine.: Ever since I picked it up, I have been unable to let it go. The book has taught me a great deal, and the stories have taken me on a great adventure. With the help of this book and another title titled "statistics without tears", I have built my statistical foundation.

The book is one I will read over and over again and would recommend it to everyone. This book is full of fun, exposition, attention-grabbing material, and an interesting take on statistics. Students would be more inclined to love statistics if all students were taught the subject as Charles Wheelan did.

This book has provided me with a great deal of information and I am interested in learning more. I would appreciate any recommendations for a book that provides an overview of advanced statistics in a similar manner.

Timothée de Rancourt: The author of the book did a great job ! The book is highly valuable for a variety of reasons: it is well structured, easy to understand for anyone - even people lacking mathematical education. It is full of practical illustrations and most importantly it made me want to go deeper into the subject with more mathematical books about probability theory and statistics.
A must-read for anyone looking for an easy introduction to statistics !

Inoltre, "Naked Statistics" non si limita a spiegare la teoria, ma fornisce anche esempi concreti dell'applicazione della statistica nella vita reale, come ad esempio la valutazione delle prestazioni degli atleti o la previsione del tempo. Dave Voyles: The rise of social media we have massive amounts of data at our fingertips. What we do with all this information is up to us. Have you ever have logged on to face the only to discover the friend who has a post with one single data point and uses that as the basis of their argument? It’s perfectly acceptable to take a stance on a hot topic but you’ll come out looking foolish if you don’t understand the statistics and data points behind your argument. Don’t be that person.

In comes Naked Statistics
Growing up, I was never fond of mathematics. I struggled in high school with a solid 65 average (that is borderline failing in the United States), and a long believed that now just wasn’t for me. It was until recently ago that I discovered I really do love numbers and specifically statistics. It’s around this all the time whether through social media or my favorite thing, gaming. Looking back, I think educators were not ever explaining to me in a way that grabbed my attention that made me want to further my math education. The blame can’t lie solely on the educators I grew up with, so I recently took it into my own hands to further my own understanding of...

G. Chapman: This book serves such an incredibly important purpose in that it really explains the fundamentals of statistics in a way that can be appreciated and understood by the vast majority of reasonably educated laymen.

Of course, that in itself begs the question: so what? What about statistics is so "important" that the average person should take notice? Well, for a lot of reasons that Mr. Wheelan explains so well its hard to add anything to it, but I'll give one brief attempt for those of you bothering to read the review: At its core, statistics is about organizing data in a meaningful way such that we can draw accurate conclusions about our environment...in other words, statistics can help us make sense of the world around us in a very meaningful and practical way. Statistics is really just a mathematically formalized form of what our brains do intuitively, and without that core concept of filtering and making sense of the information we're exposed to we would all be paralyzed - unable to make associations, draw conclusions, or derive any meaning from our environment. Learning would be impossible, life would be meaningless, and existence and survival itself would be impossible....
