Dave: Shattered Sword tells the story of the Battle of Midway from the perspective of the Imperial Japanese Navy, and the acknowledgements indicate that the authors had support from some of the best available sources on the subjects they touch on, lending weight to their arguments and authority to their work. The authors are well-read on the subject and most of the relevant background, and it goes into a good level of detail not only on the battle but in the lead-up to the battle. The style of writing is enjoyable and accessible (although also a little ‘dramatic’ at times), and the detail on events impressive (sometimes to a fault, but usually treading a good balance), while the structure covers events in a natural way that leads the read on through the story.

To give an example of the range of topics covered, the authors discuss how Japanese carriers spotted their planes before missions, the effectiveness of Japanese anti-aircraft fire control, the nature of the pre-mission wargames and some of the personalities and their interactions in the Japanese fleet as well, of course, as the actual battle itself. There are no less than eleven appendices covering a range of details...

Tracy M. Bovee: I have been interested in the Pacific theatre of World War II – and in particular of the Battle of Midway – since I was a very little boy. I still clearly remember going to the theater with my father to watch a showing of the movie Midway while it was still in its first run. Such an amazing cast playing all the primary characters of that episode from history (and perhaps a few who didn’t actually belong), retelling the story in all its detail. Even though at that age I was plenty aware that not (nearly!) all the technology shown (ships, planes and so on) were correct representations of what was actually there, and that a good chunk of the old video footage they used was from stock unrelated to Midway itself (and indeed, in some cases, from MUCH later), I didn't mind; in my imagination I could provide the proper images. And besides, it was the STORY that was important!

And I knew that story well, courtesy of such authors as Walter Lord, Samuel Eliot Morison and Edward Jablonski, amongst others. As a child – and even to this day – I avidly read and re-read these magnificent, gripping accounts about how massively outclassed and outnumbered American soldiers, sailors...

DarthRad: I first read about the Battle of Midway a long time ago and decided to revisit this history. "Shattered Sword" has to rank as one of the best ever books that I have read about this conflict.

The book, through careful research of Japanese and American naval records ends up shattering a number of long standing myths (both American and Japanese) about this battle.

(Another book "The Unknown Battle of Midway: The Destruction of the American Torpedo Squadrons" should be read as a companion piece to "Shattered Sword" - it gives an in-depth account of the failings of American naval aviation at the Battle of Midway).

There is a reason that it has taken over sixty years for such a book to be written about this battle. It has taken that long to finally get a dispassionate look at the events as they really happened.

Almost all the major participants who contributed to the original story of the battle are now dead. American pride about her victories in WWII and the need for myth-making about the heroics of the Greatest Generation have faded. The result is a greater emphasis on examination of the written record of naval operations to recreate what happened, rather...
