Judy h: I thoroughly enjoyed learning how intelligent, trusting, compassionate and faithful these majestic animals are. Many times I was absolutely heartbroken but fell in love with them for their bravery. I only question whether we deserve their loyalty.

Iris: Buy! This book is non-fiction, which I
prefer.
Your knowledge about these majestic creatures will increase beyond your expectations.
It portrays an Englishman who
fell in love with them, and also found a wonderful lady in the jungle who matched him. Even the feared black mamba did not phase her. Read how they got the elephants safely to India from Burma in WW II.
Be sure to pass this on to others!

Ravindran: Vicki Croke's "Elephant Company" is a fabulous book that brings to life, J.H. William's deep and passionate relationship with the teak logging elephants of Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation, and his exceptional contribution to the war efforts.
During lashing monsoons, jungles of Burma become inaccessible, and the swollen rivers turn treacherous. The author has painstakingly researched and chronicled the formidable living and working conditions of both humans and elephants alike in the inhospitable Chindwin River belt.
Elephant Bill's selfless service and sacrifice earned him so much respect, that during the Japanese occupation, he was able to lead herds of elephants, and weak and infirm refugees, hundreds of miles to safety in India, through uncharted and hazardous hill tracts.
Author Croke took me back to my logging stint half a century ago chronicled in my book "An Elephant Kissed My Window".

susan h: From the first pages I was drawn into the world of elephants and their majesty, intelligence and emotional connections to each other and humans. Although I would not normally enjoy a book about the war , this was different. Highly recommend for all

Mary Spilsbury Ross-author: Elephant Company came highly recommended from a member of our book club and it did not disappoint. There were many interesting facts about Burma, the British monopoly of the teak industry and the lives of the men who ran it. A highlight for most readers has got to be the building of the elephant ladder up an impenetrable sheer rock wall in 2 days. It was thrilling and moving the love between man and elephant. I left off one star as the novel drags in the middle when Elephant Bill meets his bride to be until she and children get sent off to safety in India. Then it picks up again to an exciting conclusion. Very well written and well researched.

susan archibald: One of the best books I have read. A fascinating glimpse into the world of the relationship between working elephants and those who cared for them before and during WW2 in Burma. The story is based around a British man who went at a young age to learn the art of training and working with elephants in the teak trade. He formed an unusual bond with the elephants illuminating their intelligence and their bonds within their families and elephant friends as well as their trust of their gentle handlers. Also when the Japanese invade Burma and advance towards the small settlements, the hero of the story with some elephants are able to bring many Burmese and British families from Burma to safety in India. Often the elephants perform heroic measures to climb cliffs and escape from the approaching Japanese armies. The amazing part of the book was how the elephants faithfully followed the path of the courageous and clever elephant leaders through danger and unsurmountable challenges, saving many lives.

Janyce K. Mose: After reading several books about WWII and Burma, I was totally unaware of these elephants. Most interesting to see someone using humane training techniques in a time when it was never used. Stories of the teak industry also enlightening. As an animal lover, I totally understand that eternal connection. Thanks for a good read.
