Richard L. Centner: This is an extremely fun book to read whether you're a serious baseball fan or just a statistics buff. It shows why baseball is by far the best sport for a collection of persnickety stats. Some players look even better than you may remember - Stan Musial certainly, but also Curt Schilling [the only pitcher in history with more than 9 strikeouts per game and more than 9 strikeouts per base on balls in the same season]. During the Korean War, Ted Williams flew 39 combat missions. He was struck by enemy fire three times and was awarded 3 air medals . . . and he also played 43 games for the Red Sox, batting .406/.508/.901. As one writer once wrote, Ted Williams was the hero John Wayne always wanted to be -- and I'm a great John Wayne fan. Ernie Banks had a WAR [wins above replacement] of more than 7.5 four times. That's more than Sammy Sosa (1) and Derek Jeter (2) combined. A few players may turn out to be a little less impressive than you recall, but that's another thread that makes this book so good.

Steven Peterson: A nice little bon bon. The Introduction note the context for the book: "Stat[istic]s tell stories." One feature of the book is a team by team analysis, based on sets of statistics appropriate for each.
One of my best friends has always been a Yankee fan. As an homage to him, here are some facts. Up front, we learn that "The Yankees were never sub-.500 during any span of 162 games played by Derek Jeter. Babe Ruth batted .401 through a 255 game period from April, 1923 through August, 1924. Another Ruthism: He had five seasons with these slashes--.350/.500/.725 (batting average, on base percentage, and slugging percentage). All other players in baseball history=4. We also see that about 15% of Lou Gehrig's stole bases were steals of home.
My favorite team is the Chicago White Sox. Growing up, my favorite player was Nellie Fox. Here's a stat on him. From July 1954 to June, 1959, he played 741 games. He was hit by pitches (60) more times than he struck out (59). Frank Thomas (The Big Hurt) had the highest on base percentage (.419) since 1946.
And so on. . . .
Overall, a lot of fun!

KERRY: Excellent book! Very interesting and obscure statistics, and presented very well. A must have for baseball fanatics.

Laurent Roy: I was very disappointed by this book. For each MLB team, the writer has a few pages about the team history and a small sample of “incredible” stats from key players. The author gives you some number, stats, a few anecdotes and that’s it. It is difficult to read (too many numbers and stats; no analysis). It could quite boring and you don’t get his opinion.

Agent Squirrel: I purchased this as a gift for a friend who loves baseball. He finally had a chance to read it and said this book was great. From what he told me, this is not just a book of stats. It goes though how they have changed over time and how it is not always easy to compare the stats of today's players with those of a hundred years ago.
For anyone not just interested in watching baseball but also in the history of baseball and the players, this seems like the prefect gift.

blueshorts1067: This book is -- I can't explain it -- everything that fans of the game, new and old, should be reading. I've never witnessed such a command of newer statistical metrics to bring modern context to some of the game's greatest achievements. It will help you appreciate Wade Boggs, Pedro Martinez, Sandy Koufax and Cal Ripken with a lens that will reshape how you appreciate newer stars, like Bryce Harper or Mike Trout.
Baseball has had a tough journey back to prominence, and at what appears to be the dawn of another golden era, it's more important than ever to understand why what you're seeing on a nightly basis is so significant. This book does precisely that.
