LimaBNLimaBN: Decent history, written well. Overcame my strong antipathy to the author's employment at Fox, disclosed in the liner notes.
I've read three or four biographies of Grant over the years - there aren't any surprises in this book, but it does a good job of covering the topic and deals in believable fashion with the issue of whether Grant
was alcoholic. Reading this book has convinced me to finally sit down with Grant's autobiography.

Michael Walter: Interesting book about a true war hero and our 18th president. Bret Baier and Catherine Whitney write in a very easy to digest way so I enjoyed this biography and was struck by the main differences between the constitutional crisis following the election of 1876 and the one just a few years ago. First, in 1876 there actually were a few states where the overall vote was up in the air as opposed to 2020 when not one shred of evidence has been found to show voter fraud or a rigged election. Too, Grant, as the outgoing president that year, simply brokered the compromise which resolved the issue and allowed for the peaceful transfer of power. So despite the authors’ attempt at trying to compare these two dark moments in our country’s history, I didn’t see much similarity.
I remember my dad not having a very high opinion of Grant (as president, not as a general) and I’d’ve liked to discuss this book with him. I think it would have made him happy that I expressed any interest in his favorite period of US history.

Amazon Customer: Baer draws a superficial analogy with the 1876 election that Gen. Grant shepherded to a resolution without re burnishing the fires of the civil war. Today’s shenanigans are more a question of safeguarding integrity of an election. The question of who can vote is resolved. The question of keeping that vote pure from manipulated contamination is at stake.
