J. Runaas: I'm a music teacher and have young kids of my own. I bought this for my own use to see if they are as annoying as people say. I can say I think this may be superior to the recorder for beginners.
The tone is... not bad, especially considering the reputation these have. Because it has a whistle type mouthpiece it is not nearly as sensitive to embouchure or breath variance, so I can say with certainty that a badly played flutophone/trophy flute sounds worlds better than a recorder played by an average elementary student. A well played recorder obviously sounds better, but honestly who has ever heard an elementary beginner play a recorder well?
As a test I gave my recorder and my flutophone to my father, who is not musical at all. He was able to make decent sounds on the flutophone in just a few tries, whereas the recorder sounded... well, exactly like it does when you unleash them on a group of 4th graders. Squeaks, shrill, ear-piercing. The flutophone was MUCH easier on the ears.
I think I might suggest these to my elementary school colleague for her 3rd graders next year. The small scale length and raised tone holes are also perfect for beginners and small hands.
I...

Jess LJess L: Sounds like the dollar store recorder but feels cheaper. Very rough edges. Overpriced for the quality, should be a dollar.

leanne reeve: My 8 year old daughter wanted one of these after using one at school. She loves it and sounds good when played well lol. Not pitchy or squeaky, great for 1st time players

H B: Both the flutophone, and the songflute are very close brothers.
They share the same volume body, same fingerholds, and same materials, and both are tuned to the key of C, and both are about as loud as the other volume wise.

Both have extrusions on where the fingerholes for easier playing, and the same distance of the fingerholes from the soundhole.
Both have 7 top holes and one bottom hole, although the flutophone has an eight hole right next to the low C, to play the C#.

The differences are minute.

While Selmer's songflute is more basic and cheaper made, it has better finger positions, curved with the hand. The Flutophone's holes are more straight (in line), like on a recorder flute.

To play a low C# on the songflute, one has to halfway remove the pinky from the tonehole, which can be tricky, while the Flutophone has an extra hole there for the C#. This does not affect playability in any way, as it's just as hard to play the C# on either one of the flutes, and the extra hole isn't felt anyway.

The Flutophone has a wider, but more narrow mouthpiece by a millimeter or two, resulting in slightly less airflow, but a more defined tone (like a...

K.Draper: I wanted to get a black flutophone partly because it looked like it might be made of a better material than the white one, but in fact it is the same thing (the box shows white, and a label which indicates actual color), so unless you really want a black one, you'd be better off getting one of the white ones. This one has free shipping if for amazon Prime members, but at $6.64, it is still higher than the white one which sells for $2.44 + $2.10 shipping. If you want to get more for stocking stuffers or a class, you can order five for $13.50 + $5.99 shipping, or 4.10 each. These flutophones are very simple and cheap instruments, and I think, while they are fun, are probably only worth about $4.00.

As far as the range of notes, it starts at middle C (I checked on my piano, and it is pretty accurate), and goes up an octave to the next C, plus two notes (D and E). (That is Do through Do, with an extra re and mi added on top) Playing a C scale is very easy as far as fingering, but it also will play a chromatic scale, but this involves a little more complex fingering, not too hard, though. There is a little fingering chart included, but no music. If you loose the chart, or want...
