Steven: I’ve been slowly building my own personal ‘hot rod’ go-anywhere CX bike. For this build I’m going for pure awesomeness, so I’m carefully picking each component. The requirements for each component are simple: they have to function really well and they have to look awesome.

Next up was the seatpost. I mulled over a bunch of various seatposts for a couple days. Should I go for carbon? Should I go for aluminum? What brand should I get? What color? During my search I kept coming across Thomson, which seems to be the gold standard for a really solid no frills yet still awesome seatpost, so I ordered one.

This thing is perfect! The craftsmanship, quality and finish are way above average. I really dig how easy it is to adjust the saddle angle. With seatposts in the past I always had a problem getting it just right but with the Thomson it’s painlessly simple. I can’t figure out why this isn’t the standard way to set the angle, other seatposts overcomplicate it and make adjusting cumbersome.

Yeah, the Elite isn’t the lightest seatpost, but whatever, this build isn’t about that. This is a finely crafted piece that will likely outlast me, even if I...

David Delson: I've been using Thomson ever since my American Classic snapped when I hit a bump in the road and sent me sprawling with the saddle flying off the bike. Very spooky and could have been catastrophic. After that episode I seriously researched seatposts and ended up with Thomson Elite. Not only is it bombproof but also infinitely adjustable with the two roller nuts that allow you to make the tiniest adjustments and dial in the most precise fit imaginable. All the weight weenies crying about an extra 20 grams - I defy anyone in the world to actually be able to detect 20 grams extra while you are on your bike. I want safety first after my crash and I get that along with great looks and amazing functionality. 100% love and recommend Thomson.

DB BluBlock ProductionsDB BluBlock Productions: Well, typical Thomson quality here. It is exactly as I had expected.. light, strong, and precisely machined. I am one of the few people that have had issues with it sliding down here and there, but I'll figure it out. Perhaps if I get the Thomson post collar my problems will be solved, so for now I will assume that its my stock Cannondale collar causing the slippage.

Other than that there isn't much to say here. If you are looking for an affordable high quality seatpost, stop looking and purchase this one. I purchased the setback, and don't really know if there is another brand comparable in setback posts for mountain biking.

Gargamel: I ordered from Amazon.com the black setback 27.2x330mm, but it appears that I received the 400mm one instead. No matter, it works just fine on my bike. The clamp mechanism is good in that it will probably keep your seat in the exact position forever, and in that it allows for very fine-grain adjustment to the tilt. On the other hand, it is a bit of a pain to adjust. But I guess that is still a good trade-off.

Don't be fooled by the claims of super-lightweight seatpost: Mine weighs ~285g at the scale, the same as a Bontrager Race Lite 27.2x330mm which I also own. All of this said, I think it's a really good seatpost at a great price point, and I would probably buy it again.

Margaret: I didn't buy my Elite at Amazon as I got a better price elsewhere. It's lucky I did as while I waited for delivery I kept reading various postings on the internet bike forums about Thomson's Elite and Masterpiece slipping despite users greasing, not greasing, carbon paste, no carbon paste etc. Still there were plenty of happy users who reported no slippage. I noticed quite a few titanium frame users having trouble. I whipped out my vernier caliper and my Litespeed Ultimate showed , luckily, I thought, exactly 27.2mm. Further reading and research and I found that right on Thomson's site (it isn't that easy to find) they state that their posts are indeed undersized, all of them, by .05mm. So your 27.2 Thomson is really a 27.15mm post. In fact here is the link to Thomson's PDF so you don't take my word for it. [...] (well, Amazon deleted the link but you'll find it if you look.)
That's fine if you're using it on a steel frame or use a steel collar. In my case I wanted to replace an older American Classic that slipped in my frame because it mic'd exactly as small as Thomson's in my caliper as per Thomson's website spec. I pulled out an old Campagnolo Super Record seat post and it...
