Amazon Customer: You are probably thinking: I don't want to hear any more about WWII concentration camps!! But this book is so, so much more!! For starters, the diary by Odd Nansen was originally published in 1949. In 2010, Timothy Boyce heard about the book and felt compelled to have it republished. Someone who heard Boyce speak about the original book arranged for Vanderbilt University Press to republish the book. In real life Boyce practiced law; most recently as the managing partner of the Charlotte, NC office of an international law firm.
Based on the recommendation of a board member who heard Timothy Boyce speak, my group, the Friends of the Library, Potomac, MD hosted Timothy Boyce via Zoom on August 25, 2020. The book is not in our library system so I purchased a copy for the Friends to present to the library. I planned to first read it, but delayed. Finally just before the scheduled talk I started. WOW! It is fascinating just to read the Introduction, the Preface, and the Acknowledgments. The Preface was written by Thomas "Tommy" Buergenthal who as a 10-year old in the same German concentration camp was befriended and no doubt saved by Odd Nansen. Buergenthal, who eventually immigrated...

Andrew Ward: A good deal of thanks should go to Timothy Boyce for bringing this book back to life. It’s beautifully written and a fascinating read not only for those interested in the time period but as a testament to the triumph of the human spirit through the bleakest of times. This edition provides comprehensive footnotes that help contextualise Nansen’s experience along with significant events happening outside the camp that affected the course of the war. Along with this you also have Nansen’s evocative sketches that prove he was a master draughtsman, a great writer and the best human.

John J. Eagan: Odd Nansen was the son of accomplished parents. Odd’s father formally trained as a zoologist / marine biologist. His interest led to Arctic exploration. In 1888, he was the first man to cross Greenland. In a latter expedition, lasting over three years, he almost made it to North Pole. In Norway, he was a national hero. Following the first World War, he was appointed as the League of Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. In 1922, he was honored with the Nobel Peace Prize for his refugee work. Odd’s mother was an artist and singer. As a singer, she performed in all the Scandinavian capitals.
Odd studied architecture at the Norwegian Institute of Technology. In 1927, he graduated, married the love of his life: Kari Hirsh, and moved to New York City. He practiced architecture and urban planning for three years in New York before moving back to the family estate in Norway. Shortly after Odd’s return, his father died in 1930. Odd established his own architecture firm in Oslo.
In 1933, Hitler and the Nazis seized power in Germany. In 1936, several prominent Norwegians, approached Odd, as the bearer of the Nansen family name, to organize an assistance program for...

michele chayson: This the most informative book to read if you are interested in studying the Holocaust. I received the book from Aloha Library. Although the book was used, it appeared to be like brand new. I have read numerous biographies and memoirs on the topic of the Holocaust. I enjoyed reading all of these books. However, "From Day to Day" a diary based on the author's experiences in a concentration camp. helps the reader to be empathetic to the atrocities inflicted upon numerous groups of people, in particular, the Jewish people. This book is very hard to put down!
