Shawna: The book started a little slow and was slightly predictable. It was however well written and has an interesting premise. I really enjoyed reading this book.

Abi Ramirez: I read these books in middle school and loved them, revisiting them as an adult makes them even better. Truly a timeless series I will continue to re-read and revisit throughout my life. The best type of nostalgia is reading a book you loved as a kid and you can find new aspects to love as you age.

Claire: Oh my gosh! I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump, having read so many great books and some not so great books with my KU subscription. I stumbled across this book (series) and thought “oh yeah let’s give it a go” … well oh my goodness I am so damn glad I did!! I have devoured it in less than a day and can’t wait to read the rest in the series.

Harrison LaJoie: I thought that this book was a very fun and good read. I went into this book not expecting to like it, but I was pleasantly surprised. I really liked the character development of America, and who she started to fall in love with. I thought that her gradual change from being heavily in love with Aspen to hating him. Then while she was hating him, she slowly started to fall for Maxom. I could tell that the author felt very strongly about the characters she was writing. The characters felt real, and Kiera Cass displayed the setting fantastically. I could picture myself in any scene.

Cliente de Kindle: I agree with what I've seen of some reviews, that says that the world building of an apocalyptic situation is not realistic.

There are so many things that are not realistic, it puts me off... The rebel situation is not realistic, like, why do they manage to get into the palace but at the same time be a bunch of barbarians? Something doesn't add up. Nothing is really know about them, there should be more research and intelligence gathering.

Also the 30 brides (or whatever) competing for the crown/prince... That situation should 100% devolve into the hunger games. But apart from one semi-mean girl, everyone else is just shades of girl who are all worthy and misunderstood and become friends if they talk more than 2 minutes... Yeah right. Vanilla, bleugh!

I like the main female character's romantic troubles, it seems legit most of the time, and she seems to have common sense and all. But the boys... I don't really like either of them; one is a naive fool and the other an idiot fool. Neither of them deserve her, she shouldn't settle.

Also the little things, like music is supposed to be her thing, her calling. And yet, she has hardly touched an instrument or...

LunchWithLions: SPOILERS AHOY!

These books are pretty. I have to say, when I first saw the covers, I thought they were supposed to be a bunch of different girls wearing the same dress. Then I looked closer when I got them and realized it’s supposed to be the one girl with multiple mirrors. I opened the book and the chapter headings made me think the book had water damage. I had to look at a couple of them to realize the smearing had been done on purpose. I don’t know if that’s supposed to be symbolic of anything, but if it is, it’s not working. It’s a good thing there *wasn’t* water damage, because the paper quality is atrocious. One wrong page turn and you’ve got toilet paper.

This book is lightweight entertainment. It's not supposed to have deep hidden meaning, symbolism or any of that other crap. Go read the shinola served up in high school and college literature classes of you want that kind of stuff. Or anything with a Newberry medal on it. I like books like this for the same reason I like bad movies, like The Hot Chick. It's basically junk food for the mind. Now you can have junk food made out of real sugar, or it can be made from corn syrup. There's a lot of...

Sandy Farmer: The Selection received a lot of hype back when it was first released. The more hype I saw the more interested I was in reading this book—especially after my friend Paula enjoyed it so much. However, we all know that hype isn’t always a good thing. Sometimes our expectations get too high. So I tried to go into this book expecting to vaguely like it and hoping to be impressed beyond that. I briefly saw mention on a Goodreads review a reference to Kiera Cass’s behavior but there were no details so I have no idea what that’s about, and I don’t think I want to know either. I just wanted to mention that my opinion of the book is in no way influenced by anything other than my experience. And I have to say, I was highly impressed.

Let me start out by saying that there were some flaws. One of the biggest conflicts of the book (and series maybe?) was glaringly obvious from the very beginning. The book description tells us that being chosen for The Selection wasn’t something America wanted. She wanted to find a way to marry her secret boyfriend, Aspen. Yet, she had no idea that she would end up with a connection to Maxon like she does and so we’ve obviously got a...

Kirsty: This book really surprised me, as I went into it expecting to like it, but not love it. The Selection is about a teenage girl named America Singer (more on that name later), and how she winds up taking part in an event/competition with thirty four other girls in the chance of marrying Prince Maxon. I loved this book and read most of it in one sitting, which meant that I stayed up most of the night. It has been years since I read that much of a book sacrificing sleep in order to finish it, which spoke volumes to me and helped this novel rise up to one of my favourite books ever. Now this book has received a lot of mixed reviews and seems to have a love it or hate it kind of response going on. I personally wouldn't let the negative reviews put you off, so long as you actually go into this story expecting the right thing. My aim in this review is to provide guidance so that you can make an educated decision about whether this book series is for you, without mentioning any spoilers of course.

First of all, this novel is set in a dystopian world, but that is not the main focus, so if you want to read this book purely for the dystopian element, then don't as you will end up...

Key.: I had been interested to read this ever since I saw the beautiful cover and I thought the premise was interesting. I ended up getting it for 99p on my kindle, so I thought even if I didn't like it, I hadn't wasted too much of my money but now that I've read it, I do not think that this was 99p well spent. (I started writing this review before I had read about the drama about the attitude against negative reviews of 2012 as I only discovered this information after finishing the book and checking out other peoples reviews to see what they thought, if I had read that before, I probably wouldn't have bothered, though I have not let this affect my review for this book at all, everything I write is my own opinion). This review will have spoilers.

America moaning that people were calling her beautiful irritated me. Why do so many authors does this? Has a girl who is beautiful, but doesn't realise it. It's almost become a cliché. I think it's meant to build character, to show low confidence, or something, but the characters confidence, more often than not, is fine, so it's usually more of an annoyance and a waste of words. Obviously America is attractive, otherwise she wouldn't...

Mikka Liest: If you mix dystopian YA fantasy with casting shows like The Bachelor, what do you get? A surprisingly entertaining read, apparently! No, it doesn't have half the depth of The Hunger Games, so don't get into it expecting much more than a pleasant evening or two of reading... But if you're ok with that, this book is a good choice, in my opinion.

It is set in a far away future, in a country that's risen from the ashes of today's United States of America. Society is organized in a strict caste system; the caste you're born into determines not only your social status, but also the professions you're allowed to pursue. For example, if you're a "Six", you're bound to be a servant. A "Five" has to become something creative - a singer, a dancer, an artist... If you don't have a talent for what you're supposed to do, you're simply out of luck.

Every caste below Four is looked down upon by those who are more fortunate. At the very top of the social pecking order is the royal family - yes, the USA have ressurected as a monarchy, of all things! There is a curious tradition in place that allows the ruling caste to show some sense of kin and fellowship with the lower castes: the...
