Kathleen A. Carbone: Dislike that the back cover & few pages of book were creased, bent. The tape on the box was torn in many areas. Other than that it was fine.

Buntline: Engrossing book of the events leading up to the Chosin Reservoir event in the Korean War, details of the Chinese invasion, and the escape from the area. Subsequent happenings are noted. Very detailed and well written account of a tragic period during the war.

Kretch: I read a lot of military history books. But, I have to say, this one is outstanding. Mr. Cleaver obviously did a great amount of research before beginning to write his book. And it shows. He paints his story slowly and thoroughly. You'll learn about the history of Korea and how that history led inevitably to the conflict. Aided, of course, by how the West totally misunderstood the fears and desires of all of the people of the peninsula. And then there's the man selected for command of all UN troops. A very high ranking US General who could only see and hear what he wanted to. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable and informative read.

D. W.: This book compares with only a few others in its power to draw the reader in and have them feel the cold, the hunger, and the exhaustion as if they were there with the troops. Only With The Old Breed and The Forgotten Soldier have done that for me. I seethed at the braggadocio and the incompetence of high leadership. And I marvel at the awesome bravery shown by soldiers almost forgotten by a modern world. Korean War history has long been neglected, and reading this book can begin to fix that problem.

Peter Guest.: Excellent account of historical events.

Ms. Debra: I agree with others that there are other books (Martin Russ' 'Breakout' and Eric Hamell 'Chosen') that give a more first hand account of the people who were there. Altho this book names one of those books for research it totally omits the first hand account and the names of all those men who were there. This may well be because a lot of the Marines from the Chosin Campaign are no longer alive, like my father. Earlier books could rely on those accounts. Sadly disappointing. I do understand that the author was trying to provide a broader political perspective on the Korean War (which is now also known as 'the forgotten war' by so many people. I expected more and was disappointed.

PKJ: Interesting aspect of USMarine Corps legacy and US diplomacy at that time

Mukund Vora: Too detailed without corresponding maps...impossible to guess how the battle panned out without maps illustrating the progress....also,the battle itself starts long past half the book....the author makes you disinterested by that time....never completed reading it...I really hoped it was a better written book

Yellowkid: My Dad was a Chosin Marine and I remember his leaving Quantico in the summer of 1950. I also served a hitch in the Corps in the 60's so this is a subject of considerable interest to me and I read anything I can get about the campaign. I guess my main gripe with this work is that less than half this book deals with the Chosin. The author does give a good look into the why of what caused us to get involved and the history of the war up to the march, but I would have preferred less of that and more about the actions around the reservoir. I did enjoy his detail in dealing with the various air outfits that gave support to the Grunts, it's the first time I've seen all the squadrons mentioned and what specific sorties they flew. Also one of the first authors to give some credit to Task Force Faith who probably did figure into at least keeping some of the ChiCom forces busy while the Marines consolidated their position at Hagaru-ri, although my Dad said that he didn't think he remembered any Army units on the East side of the reservoir.
All in all it was a pretty good read, and the lead in to the Chosin action would be good for anyone not familiar with the larger picture.
