John Williamson: As a young Marine recruit in Parris Island during the early 1960s, this reader gained a lot of insight into the Battle of Iwo Jima from an old salt who had been an underage recruit during the battles in the Pacific during WW-II. As recruits in those days, one of the key topics we heard about was Iwo Jima and the Battle of Suribachi in those days of 1945.

Richard Wheeler's book  The Bloody Battle Of Suribachi  offers us a vivid account of the only battle by Marines in which the overall American casualties, counting both killed and wounded, exceeded those of the Japanese forces, even though Japanese combat deaths were three times those of the Americans. It has all started with the amphibious landing that was given the code name Operation Detachment, and by the end, the Marines prevailed. As the author stated in his book:

"Iwo Jima was a gray silhouette in the dawn of February 19, 1945, when we got our first look at it. Our attack force had arrived off the island during the night and had merged with the mighty support force that had been bombarding Japanese defenses for the past three days."

DeeAnn Rudisill: I am the child of a veteran of WWII. My mother and father both came from very large families, and all of the young men served their country. We lost only one out of the 10 who served and he was killed at Pearl Harbor. Both sets of uncles served in Europe and the Pacific. My husband was a Navy Veteran of Vietnam, but his father was in the Navy in the Pacific. He was a Master Chief on the Mighty MO at the surrender of the Japanese. I happen to feel there has never been nor will there ever be a generation as great as these wonderful young men who literally gave their all to save a world gone mad. I love that their families were supportive so they were able to complete the terrible and difficult job they were there to do. There is a very famous saying that "War is hell". I so totally believe that, however as these incredible heroes are dying everyday around us, we are so blessed and privileged to have a few of them left in our midst and listen to them recall and relive the incredible times they survived, and stories of the friends and brothers they lost.
I'm very certain it is not often you hear of a 63 year old woman who is so interested in the history of WWII. But having grown up...

Longhunter: Aufgrund der Filme "Flags of our fathers" und "Letters of Iwo Jima" wollte ich mich einwenig mehr mit der blutigen Schlacht auf Iwo Jima beschäftigen und stieß unter anderem auf dieses Buch.

Ein Volltreffer möchte ich sagen.

Man steigt richtig in die grausame Geschichte, welche ja nun wirklich geschehen ist ein und es lässt einen kaum los.
Aufgrund dieses Buches bestellte ich mir gleich noch mehr Literatur zu diesem Ereignis: "Iwo Jima" von Bill D. Ross und "So sad to Fall in Battle" von Kumiko Kakehashi
Wenn man all diese Erzählungen gelesen hat, dann kann man sich nur wundern, was Menschen aushalten können, leisten können und sich grausames antun können.

Eine Erzählung einer sehr wahren Geschichte.
Auf das sich diese Dinge nicht immer wieder wiederholen. Warum gibt es immer wieder Krieg, trotz solcher Erlebnisse?
