PNUT: This is a really great book, whether you're interested in White Sharks or not. As if anyone isn't... Haha. It's very well written and full of interesting information about the history of the islands. Mostly it's a book about people and their experiences there. It's neat to read about Peter Pyle who I recognized from several documentaries. I give this book an A+.

Southern Arizonan from Texas: A superbly written chronicle of the author's brush with the great white sharks and the brave people who study them at the magical, forbidding Farallones. I picked this book more or less at random and I loved reading it. You will too.

Robert Brown: This is a great way to introduce students, or yourself, to the history of the Farallone Islands and great white sharks. Written from the viewpoint of a non-scientist who finds herself caught up in the lives of the Point Reyes Bird Observatory scientist who live and work under some of the most challenging conditions possible to study great white sharks in ways not possible any where else. I used this book as part of my high school Marine Science curriculum for several years. The students love this book!

Jane Riley: After reading The Wave, a masterpiece about waves and the people who study them, ride them and try to predict them, I looked for another of her strongly researched personal stories of adventure. This is a great example. What a writer. What a committed journalist.

Green Stone: What too few other reviewers have pointed out about this book, is how exceptionally well Susan Casey writes. It helps that her subject is fascinating, really compelling, but even with a fascinating subject the book wouldn't be half as good without Susan's witty and deft skill as a writer. Pg 159-160: "The Hunchback was a humongous Sister with a Quasimodo hump...her scale made the seal look like a bath toy...The great white was so big that she blocked out the light..beside the freighter I could make out the slime eel, a primitive creature with five hearts and no eyes that bores its way inside fish, devouring them from within...there was an albino sturgeon with ruby eyes, and a bioluminescent viperfish glowing like fire. Enormous jellies floated among them, trailing poisonous tentacles. As we looked down from the freighter's deck, the HUnchback ghosted by, orbiting like a stray moon."

Susan gives an account of a place that very few people will ever see or step foot on, as no one but scientists are allowed land access on the Farallon islands. And when you read her account of the appalling human history on these islands, the murder and rampaging that...

Kevin DuJan: I really love this book, because it's not just educational about sharks and other ocean-environment creatures but it's a great nonfiction travel/adventure book that I enjoy re-reading every other year or so. For some reason, I end up reading it again in the spring just before summer hits. I think that's because where I live in Chicago the weather is very gray and bleak around then, and the waves off the lake are monstrous...so it puts me in mind of the Farallon Islands and Susan Casey's book about the sharks and other creatures that dwell there.

I really admire Casey's courage...because in the book she does some pretty remarkable things that never in a million years could I ever do. The book is written in a style that feels like Susan's describing all of what she's doing directly to you, like you're a friend. She also has a way of communicating the scientific topics she's talking about in a way that's very user friendly. For instance, she'll give the scientific names of things but won't forget to describe what that means to a layperson...and she'll add lots of sensory descriptors so her readers can get a feel for how things smell, taste, and feel in...
