Daniel Almeida: Great book for beginers. As an 'intermediary' student I felt that the author spent too much time with unecessary details and too litle with more important subjects like using solvents.

Megan: I used to draw in graphite many years ago, and discovered the beauty of coloured pencils last year, and how they can produce such realistic, almost 'painted' art forms. There are now a few reference books in this area, so it can be difficult to make a choice, especially if buying online. After watching a few reviews, I decided to take a chance on this book, and was extremely happy that I did when it arrived. What a lovely gift.
The book, asides from its valuable content, would even make a great coffee table book, its so beautiful, with glossy vivid and high-quality colourful pages.
The Colored Pencil Painting Bible is a good size (180 pages and approximately A4), has a soft cover which is easy to lay open and flat when following examples, and the first part is full of excellent information on the fundamentals of colour pencil art, and in setting up your own work area and everything you need. Essential topics covered, which are also applicable in many cases, to other mediums, but which are very specific to the colour pencil, include for example:
- tools (a range of different pencil brands, paper choices, erasers, blenders and other accessories),
- tonal...

Joan E Blue: Making art has been one o the greatest passions of my lifetime. I have had a formal art education (BA - Fine Arts) and, like most artists, hobbyists or professional, I have learned and developed most of my technique through practice and a lot of trial and error. A lot of practice. A lot pf trial. And a lot of error! As happens to many people, life got in the way over the years, and my focus on making art has gone through many shifts. But recent changes have brought me back to what used to be my medium of choice, colored pencil drawing. As with any discipline, I was feeling a bit rusty around the edges, and the aspects of this particular medium (and of drawing in general) where I was not proficient were even more painfully obvious to me, now that I was "restarting"...
While browsing online, I discovered this book and read some really positive reviews. I was intrigued to read that the author favored Prismacolor pencils (one of the two brands I prefer - the other is Lyra) and I was very impressed by the ultra realism of the cover and the drawings I saw in the previews. I also liked the fact that it said Colored Pencil PAINTING, because I have always thought the style and...

Robert A. Sloan: Colored Pencil Painting Bible: Techniques for Achieving Luminous Color and Ultra-Realistic Effects
I've long enjoyed Alyona Nickelsen's newsletter from [...] so I was aware of the beauty of her brilliant hyper-realistic colored pencil paintings. She favors Prismacolors on Stonehenge paper, with a fine eye for incredible detail and the patience of a saint to create rather large works with incredible, meticulous workmanship.
I already have several other good volumes on colored pencil realism -- Cecile Baird's Painting Light with Colored Pencils, Arlene Steinberg's Masterful Color, and quite a few Gary Greene volumes. I've successfully done colored pencils realism for years and have used Prismacolors since I was a high school kid in 1971 when I twisted my grandmother's arm to get the largest set of colored pencils then available -- 72 Prismacolors. I never looked back.
I looked at this new book as a sweet addition to my library. Some new projects, maybe a few things I'd never run into. I did not expect to find so many useful tips when I've already got so many good volumes! Alyona Nickelsen is an inventive person. She has her own solutions to many technical...
