Ryan Sargent: I read this book in late 2023 and it is still very applicable today. A must read.

Evan Prevost: A must read for anyone looking to understand Bitcoin, economics, and money. Safidean is an incredible author. I look forward to reading the rest of his books.

Alek: An excellent walk through the history of money, how economics defines money and bartering, a look at the systems humanity has used along the way, and the system that humanity is choosing through their own free-will to guide them into the future. Very easy to follow along without any previous knowledge of money, economics, finance, or bitcoin. My only complaint was the small handful of opinion pieces in the middle of the book around modern art and Keynes. While Keynes is absolutely deserving of scrutiny and skepticism for his poor contributions to economics, I would prefer Saifadean not to succumb to academic "name-calling". Though if you watch any of his interviews, it's not super surprising as he is a no-bs, straight to the point kind of guy. Which I understand and appreciate. Aside from those few excerpts, the book is rational, objective, accurate, enlightening, and to the point.

mirkos86: I personally think this is an enjoyable reading, which provides context about the history of money. Many useful things are said in other positive reviews written before the present one.
The most useful negative Amazon review I have read points out that the book does not mention the importance of debt in a capitalist economy. Well, debt has always existed, in the gold standard period as well as in historical periods of government-controlled, often inflationary money, so I do not see the problem with not mentioning it here. This could be my flaw.
Anyway, I agree that a good complement to this book for a more thorough understanding of the potential that blockchain technology might unlock in the future is an overview of the Decentralized Finance space, which has started to convincingly emerge only after the publication of the first edition.
Bitcoin has found another vehement opponent in the very writer of the preface to this book, Nassim Taleb, who has changed his view about cryptocurrencies since 2018 and has published an interesting paper titled "Bitcoin, Currencies and Fragility", where he makes the claim, backed by financial and historical arguments, that few...

Jaron: I learned a lot from this book – enough to earn it 5 stars. I learned not just about bitcoin, but money in general. Despite its flaws, I recommend this book even to those who don’t care about bit coin. It’s a good overview of the history of money and how it works.
However, there are two flaws the reader has to look past to get the most from this book.
One is repetition, especially towards the end. Sadly, this is commonplace these days. Authors have 70-80 pages of material but seem to feel like it’s not a real book unless they can turn it into 250-300 pages. I’ll pay for a short, concise book if it has something valuable to say.
The second flaw is more unique to this book. The author strays far from his subject matter to poop all over all kinds of things.
He clearly despises John Maynard Keynes. That’s fine. But Keynes’ personal life has nothing to do with the subject of this book. And usually when an author resorts to attacking a person rather than that person’s ideas, that means the author’s ideas can’t stand up to the ideas it is criticizing, and thus has to attack the person behind the ideas to distract the reader.
This is...
