sntrada: I have grown tired of ordering out and having no control over what goes in my food, dealing with long delivery times, and getting cold food. I decided that I want to cook more myself, but as I stay in a studio with a tiny kitchen and a single burner infrared stove, cooking did not seem straightforward. So I searched Amazon for a solution, and I found this gem!
Everything is straight to the point, with cooking fundamentals covered. The recipes are truly easy and delicious and tend to the healthier side, which is awesome since I am also trying to embrace a healthier lifestyle.
All in all, I am ecstatic that I found this book. This is the best $7 I have spent in a long time, and I strongly recommend this to everyone...even though I am not the target demographic 😉

M. Crockford: It is a small cookbook, has beautiful pictures but some of the recipes might not be appealing to a college student.

YvesYves: Really disappointed with this book. There are often more than five ingredients, not necessarily things that are in student larders. The recipes are not really relevant or interesting. They are often for 4 people rather than an individual student. No pictures to guide or encourage or help the student cook check they are doing the right thing. Better just to look for recipes on the internet. I cannot emphasise how disappointing this book is, just not student friendly.

Linda Pearson: Saying there are only 5 ingredients in every recipe is misleading. If one adds spices and fresh herbs, they easily become a little more involved and in the case of herbs, more expensive than most students can afford. Also, I should have made note of the dimensions of the book - this is a tiny little thing, more like a child's board book. It was meant as part of a Christmas gift for my g-daughter; I'll just give it to her next time I see her.
On the plus side, the pages on knife skills are useful, as is the instruction for how to prepare an avocado or cut onions. I suppose if room-mates shared the cost of the recipes they would be affordable to make once in a while. But realistically, unless the student is affluent, most of the recipes are too costly to make very often.

joop: Got this for my newbie cook 19 yo college son who is an apartment and needs to be cooking more than he did last year. (the college runs ala carte pricing in the cafeteria so food plan goes by very quickly).
I agree that many of these things are very basic recipes that not only does he already know, but he knows better recipes for. That said, it was great to see him get excited about cooking many of these items and some things are really really good.
I have to say I cringed when one "healthy" recipe called for a brick of cream cheese and a cup of monterey jack cheese for 4 servings. Kids can take a lot of calories - especially growing active men but the freshman 15 could go to the sophomore 25 if that was the recipe he got stuck on!
As a vegan myself, I appreciate that there were vegan options in the book. He eats meat but enjoys meat-free cooking as well.
Knocking off 1 star because most of the recipes require more than 5 ingredients (esp. when following notes for add-ins or variations) and because there is no nutritional info for recipes as amended by add-ins/variations - and these can make an enormous difference in nutritional composition.
