James Cannon: To start, I'm 6'1" 185 lbs and bought this pack for me for the purpose of 2-3-day back country camping trips with 5-10 mile backpack hikes through mountainous terrain, which I've been doing regularly for the past 25 years or so. I'm a bit of a minimalist, so no fancy propane stoves, lanterns, or the like for me, and i was hopeful this pack -with its advertised smaller size- might be a good fit my purposes as most packs of mine end up with a lot of empty space I don't use. I was pleased with the look out of the box. Zippers and seams appear strong, intelligent design with plenty of pouches and places to tie stuff, such as my cooking pot, on the outside. It took a little figuring to sort the straps for my height and get the waist belt resting on my hips instead of cinched around my guts. Although I manged it in a totally satisfactory way, ideally, I may be a little tall for the pack and would imagine it'd fit better if I were a few inches shorter. As far as it's size vs my wide shouldered average adult male frame, it fits wonderfully with no indication of being too small to affect mobility or add extra joint pain at the end of 5-10 mile walk through rugged terrain than any other...

J. Kramer: I bought this pack 8 years ago when I was preparing for my first 14er in CO. My experienced hiker buddy said I shouldn't summit a 14er in CO with a airport backpack with wheels. So, I found this inexpensive pack that would fit 2 nights worth of gear and would carry the weight on my hips.
Since my first 14er eight years ago, I've used it for 5 other 14ers, 1-2nights on the mountain per trip, up & down Mt. Kilimanjaro, and nearly 20 hiking/climbing trips in CO and in the RRG ... each just 1-2 nights at a time (except Kili, but that doesn't count due to porters). It has carried typical overnight camp equipment as well as rock climbing shoes, draws, ropes, etc.
I'm now in the market for a new pack, and I'm not buying another Scout 3400. The price has increased since my purchase in 2011 due to positive reviews, but I believe it is still a good deal at $80 or so. Would I recommend it to a friend? It depends. Will I continue to use my current Scout 3400? Yes. Will I buy another one? No. Here's why ...
The description and pictures indicate that there have been no improvements to the pack in 8 years. That's both good and bad.
+The pack is super durable! It shows...

CyberCynthiaCyberCynthia: I bought this for my slender teenage son's camping trips. It held enough to carry everything he needed (except food) for 5 days. The little pockets, elastic toggle areas and areas to clip-on helped organize everything. The compartments are great so he could access the sleeping bag without digging through clothes, and the top cap could keep all the essentials ready. The fully close-able pockets on the side were great for first aid, sunscreen/bug spray and other smaller items you need frequently. We were able to adjust it to his height, and he is slight-build but the shoulders still worked for him. The rain cover in the bottom was very useful and easy to use, and in the downpours, things stayed dry.
The downside was that the waistband support arrived irreparably pinched/crushed (he had to leave immediately, so couldn't return it), so it doesn't sit or support as well as we had hoped at the waist to help offset the heavy load. In addition, the internal divider is quite thin so I am no sure how well it will hold up over the longer term. As well, it doesn't have an accessible pocket on the front (like waist or over shoulders) where you could stash ID, multitool, gum or little...

Dave: So I’m coming back for a review after having this bag for a year now and I must say it’s probably the best bag I have ever bought. It’s had very tough material that makes it great for bushwhacking, you have no worries about rips or tears. It has an extremely comfortable fit with a variety of length and height adjustments and the most comfortable shoulder straps I’ve ever had on a bag. All zippers are very well built and never get caught up in the material of the bag and all pouches and pockets are ver generously spacious.
There are only a few cons, one being it’s a little on the heavy side, weighing a little over 5lb it’s definitely not a ultra light bag. Another being the rain cover is cheaply made, it’s not fully water proof so I wouldn’t depend on it not getting the bag wet in heavy rain. I’ve had water soak through a few times so I would be advised to keep your electronics deep in the bag if you’re going to be in heavy rain (the bag has never fully soaked through even in heavy down pours) Hey a bag coming with a rain cover for 85$ is a steal of a deal so I can look past that. Lastly the interior of the bag is a bit of a tight fit at first, after a...

Andrew: I bought this bag on sale (for around $70) and I have not regretted it at all! The bag is exactly as advertised and has many features I love. The internal aluminum frame adds a little extra weight to the bag but it definitely increases its comfort. The padding on the shoulders and support strap are very thick and don't cause any discomfort of pain. They can also be adjusted to get the right fit on your back. The bag itself fit all my gear including my tent (I pack pretty lightly) and the side pockets were very handy.
I have used this bag for 4 outings with friends and every time it has been perfect. I completed a bicycle camping trip while wearing this bag and experienced no strain on my back. The ability to add a water-bladder (Camelback) is quite handy. As well, on a full day hiking trip, it started pouring rain and the built in rain-cover kept all my gear completely dry. The bag is very durable and can take being dragged on gravel, and walked through thorns (don't ask) quite well. While the olive green colour is not my favourite, it doesn't show dirt as much as other colours and it gives an earthy feel. I definitely recommend this product and for the price, you can't go...

Chad ORear: I bought two of these packs with thr intention to do some backcountry hiking. Considering I am a days drive from the mountains, I never used it for hiking. But I have used it for camping, hunting, and just general several night stays. It has lots of room, is very sturdy, quality made zippers and bungees and is overall a very good backpack. I would recommend this product to anyome in need of of a low cost quality pack for the outdoors.
