Tanita BC-554 Body Composition Analyzer - Accurately Track Body Fat, Muscle Mass, & More

Dan: I had a Tanita scale from back around 1998. It had only a few features, compared to this new one that has so many more features about different aspects of my body after I stand on it. I'm actually glad that my previous Tanita scale quit working! However, it was less than thrilling to find out how "out of shape" I am, according to this scale... and ... as I look in the mirror, I suspect the scale is right. So, it lets me keep track of my progress (forward or backward). It comes with a handy form to fill in all of the measurements it makes about the body standing on the scale. I just photocopied that form and write in the information. I'm very happy with it.

Swee: This is my 3rd Tanita Ironman scale. I had 2 exact same one before and the last one broke after 7+ years (class shattered - luckily it was tempered glass). So I decided to get another exact same one (even they don't sell in Canada, I ordered from US and willing to pay shipping and import duty etc). Unfortunately this one is defective. I can't ask for replacement, Amazon said just return and buy another one. I really love this scale (when it works). Very disappointed that this one is defective, it showed (and hung there) 00000 and didn't proceed to perform body analysis after showing the weight. When it did (1 out of many many times), the reading was all over the place, differ a lot even within few minutes.

useridchallenged: I purchased this over 10 years ago, and it's still going strong. As a scale, it's 100% reliable and accurate. The whole family uses it, and it's used multiple times each day. Batteries seem to last forever, as in years. It beeps when its done measuring your weight if you use it as just a scale. This is handy for measuring how much your luggage or boxes weigh when you can't see the read-out (of course, it's not a legal scale for measuring weights for selling or shipping things). The low profile, big numbers, and glass surface make it attractive. It stopped working in its first few months, and it was promptly replaced under warranty by the manufacturer without any hassle. In the decade since it was replaced, it has performed flawlessly. It does not work on soft surfaces like carpets or rugs - it needs to rest on a hard surface. That's its only quirk.

The body scan is only meaningful to track changes - I wouldn't trust it for actual measurements of body fat, hydration, BMR, biological age, etc. But you can see how those measurements change from day to day and over the years - and that is meaningful. sam: I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this product. I had been trying to read up on accurate ways of measuring body fat %, and much of what I had read was inconclusive. I didn't want to spend too much, but at the same time wanted to get a quality product. I have had the scale for about 3 weeks now, and all of the readings have been consistant. It gives a lot of information, some of which I don't understand or care to understand, but it gives an accurate weight reading which is the most important. The body fat% may not be perfect, but it is extremely consistant and thus it serves its purpose. Those were the two main things I was looking for in a scale. The rest of the information is interesting and nice to keep in mind. Also, seems well built and not confusing to use. Have read some complaints that it is hard to setup/confusing to use. Read the directions. The icons are a little small to read when the numbers are rolling through, but after using it for a couple times, you know what numbers are coming up and don't even have to try to read the icons. Anyway, I would definitly recommend.

Steve Morgan: I don't have any biological educational background. But I did read the instructions for this scale when I received it.

The important point is to weigh yourself under the same conditions from weigh in to weigh in and to program into the scale a correct profile before you begin to use it. That way you are comparing apples to apples. I weigh myself each day after I wake up and after I have moved my bowels but before putting anything in my mouth. That provides the consistency needed to compare results. This scale is very sensitive. Think about it - even a 12 ounce glass of water is going to affect your weight if you drink and then get on the scale.

I keep records of the read out on an Excel spreadsheet. I have gone on a fully researched diet based upon nutrition and calories and I have commenced a rigorous training program. I am 55 years old and I have lost 35 pounds in three months. I am 6'3" and I went from 215 lbs to 180 lbs.

Do you really need all the extra read outs (there are a total of 9) beyond weight and body fat? No, probably not. But I love gadgets and this is just another one to keep me motivated and inspired. The interactivity of seeing progress is...
