These curtains are very much light blocking, and are very insulating. As an example, I had the carpet in my home replaced 2 days ago. I took down my previous living room curtains in anticipation of putting these up. I do have a shade behind the curtains as well, but it is the type of shade made for an outside porch area. Yesterday was a very hot and humid New York afternoon, and even with the air conditioner on, my place was still so warm I also turned on the fan as well; the sun was beaming through my patio door window glass. In the early evening I finally hung these curtains. 10 minutes later, my place was an ice block! The curtains did such a fantastic job of blocking the sun, the air conditioner cooled everything immediately! I imagine in the winter, it will do the same thing for retaining...
