Shark Navigator Lift-Away Professional Upright Vacuum (NV356E S2)

Robert: I seem to have to replace vacuums every year, it's quite annoying and expensive. I have owned many different brands, Dyson, Dirt Devil, Bissell, and Shark. I personally feel Shark is the best value for the money.

When looking to buy yet another vacuum, I was looking for something where I could shut off the power roller bar for hardwood use, and Shark was the first one to come up that was within a decent price range. Having owned a Shark before, I also kind of knew what to expect.

I do wish it had the option to adjust the vacuum height. Also, it would be nice if it had a light, but those features aside, it is a decent vacuum with good suction, and it gets the job done also, being able to shut off the roller bar is a plus.

On my first Shark, I noticed that it had a weak neck where it meets the power head, in fact that is what led to the demise of it back then (but all of these brands have some kind of weakness). Unfortunately, it seems the Shark also has the same weakness in the neck, I am disappointed to see that Shark has not remediated that issue. I will try to figure out if there is a way to fortify that on my own.

So, if you want a pencil-neck vacuum...

SR: UPDATE: My mistake! The crevice tool WAS included. Also, the more I use this, the more I like it.

This one replaced another Shark upright that was just not self-propelling properly anymore and had lost some suction ability. It was becoming an effort to vacuum, and I began putting off the task. This one is a welcome replacement. It does have its downsides, though, which the other did not have. Here's what I think of this new one...

PROS
-self-propulsion works like a dream
-pulling it back isn't very hard because it's a lighter-weight machine
-excellent suction, which is easily adjustable to the type of flooring, and the adjustment requires no bending
-effortless swivel
-cord is easy to unwind
-the lift-away is a nice feature
-the short "hand" wand and the longer "arm" wand are nice features
-it's easier to reach the attachment than it was on my previous unit
-the pet brush head works GREAT
-it's quieter than the previous vacuum
-it's very easy to tip the canister away from the floor unit in order to begin vacuuming, much easier than with my previous machine

CONS
-the cord is too short, several feet shorter than my previous...

Anthony MAnthony M: I never thought I’d be writing a review on a vacuum cleaner, but in this case after having had Dyson's for over 15 years this one earns a mention. Don’t let the price or name fool you, this easily out performs the Dysons in many ways. The Dyson(s) this is replacing is the DC07 Animal and DC27 ball vacuum. I have no regrets. My reviews are normally pretty long-winded, but I feel there's a lot to cover here for a product you hope to only buy once and service you for many years.

Build
The product is fairly well constructed; however, it is not as heavy duty as the dyson. The clips are a little flimsier, and a little smaller. The Dyson is no champion in this department either as it’s entirely plastic and I’ve replaced pieces many times over the years. This seems to be rugged enough in places that matter, and I’m pleased to find the extension tube is made of metal. Parts snap together well and easily, and it seems to require far less effort to reconfigure. Size-wise it’s closer to the ball vacuum, power-wise the larger DC07.
