A man from Scandinavia: A clear and concise description of the muscles involved in cycling. Easy to know which muscles and how to strengthen.

metalcowgurl: I actually take this book to the gym with me in my gym bag. I refer to it so that I can visually match machine to the right muscle groups. I have done full and metric centuries, and the first to go is shoulders and lower back. The book breaks down these areas as they match the motion you make on the bike. Core work, from shoulders to hip flexors is essential - something I did not realize before, until I referred to this book. It would be neat if there was a digital version so that I could load the diagrams on my cell phone. Otherwise, I look like a bookworm with the book lying open on the ground as I am doing the rowing machine. :-)

Speck: I needed to improve my upper body strength and flexibility.
With Cycling Anatomy I was able to very quickly find suitable exercises and easily understand and execute them.
Results were obvious within days.
I'd recommend this book for cyclists whether male, female, young, old, professional or beginners.
Oh, by the way, I'm 79 - it's never too late to exercise and see results.

D. Bower: I have a long term interest in cycling but serious illness had meant that for the last few years I haven't been able to get out on my bike nearly as much as I'd like. Now, illness behind me I can get back on my bike and hopefully get back to a level of fitness I enjoyed a few years ago.

I have a very basic understand of the importance of core fitness to cycling and own my set of weights and a bench so have been doing some basic exercises in order to build my strength up and hopefully avoid injury but I wanted some specific guidance as to precisely what exercises would be of most use with cycling in mind.

This book is superb in doing this. It first gives a general overview of how muscles work and why whole body training is important to the cyclist.

It is then broken down into the various parts of the body; Arms, Shoulders and Neck, Chest etc and gives several core exercises for each along with useful variations of each exercise should a certain technique be easier for you. It also describes what benefit each exercise for the cyclist (note these are all road cycling related, no mountain bikes for some reason but I don't see this as a major...

Caroline McMASTER: I bought this book based on the reviews that stated the pictures were well drawn and showed what muscle groups were being used for specific exercises. Well, they were not lying. The pictures are large, colorful, and show exactly what muscles you are stretching for a warm up or exercise. The writers give very short (to the point), but detailed advice on how to perform each exercise correctly. Sometimes, they give you an alternative way of performing an exercise if the first suggestion is too difficult for a novice to perform.

The one thing I wish they had done was to write, in layman's terms, the names of each muscle group. This would make it easier for me to talk about each group of muscles to others. The terms they use are for professionals, and they are sometimes hard to pronounce. Otherwise, the pictures do the trick for showing one what muscle or muscle groups one is working.

I'm very pleased with my purchase, and highly recommend buying this book if you want to strengthen you muscles for riding.

J. Mulvaney: I have used weight training in my cycling training programme for a long time and find it very benificial. This book provides an excellent source of ideas for excercises targeted at improving endurance and power, overcoming weaknesses in form, preventing injury etc. The anatomical basis of muscle operation and how it relates and contributes to efficient cycling is wonderfully explained and illustrated. The range of excercises presented is large and well structured in terms of body zones e.g. back, arms, legs etc. Explanation of how excercises should be performed is also good. The visualisation techniques, where one is encouraged to imagine the cycling operation targeted when performing each excercise, is a great feature.

The major weakness of the book is the lack of a planning guidance. Many of us are very used to creating and following structured training plans to achieve our cycling goals. Weight training must be integrated into these plans with differing weight levels and exercises being chosen dependent on the goals of the training phase. This book only plays lip service to this and future editions would benefit from inclusion of more detailed...
