Terry BriscoeTerry Briscoe: Made my deck project extremely easy! These made my deck railings sturdy and secure and they look great! Some posts need to be trimmed or sanded to fit into them (wood swells) but once inserted and secured they are extremely sturdy.

C5LC5L: I took the time to read reviews and prepared myself for mistakes made by others. Read the following and these bases will be everything you hope them to be as they have been for me!
Breakage problems:
When putting any screw into something plastic, set the ratchet on your drill to the #3 setting. Do this, and there is no way you will break the plastic you are screwing into. The people who complain about breaking these things are not following this simple rule. I installed 8 of them, did not come close to breaking any of them! There are twelve screws in each base. You do not need to bury these screws into the base to provide a solid home for your railing posts. You only need to screw them in until they are snug and your #3 ratchet setting starts skipping. My railings are extremely solid with very little movement following this protocol.
Size of opening:
I installed eight cedar 4x4's (3.5"x 3.5") into these bases with no needed influence. They fit perfectly. If you are using green treated or cedar toned treated simply take your tape measure with you to Menards, Home Depot, or Lowe's and measure the posts you are looking at to make sure you are not buying newly...

Mary: I'm a very small 71 year old woman, but with the aid of these base supports I am able to build a 16 X 40 foot deck all by myself. I admit, due to my age, size, and health conditions the project is slow going, but these bases make setting the post and getting it straight a breeze. I've never used base supports before so I was very concerned about how sturdy they would be. I cut off the flange that attached deck posts to the side of my deck, and just set the post in the base and screwed it down. It takes 12 screws to attach the base to the deck, and another 8 screws to attach the post. These are made of a very strong plastic so there will never be any rust. After going to the expense of having a metal deck rail installed and seeing it start to rust the same summer it was installed, well, I'm happy to give this space-aged plastic a try. These state they are 3.5 X 3.5 and they really are. The only problem is a 4X4 deck post that once was 3.5X3.5 is now only 3.1 X 3.1. But the sizing isn't the fault of the product. I was able to make it work for me and paired with the black rail hangers, it adds a nice "finished appearance" to my deck.

kansas city: All the video of notching post say that this is no longer code. Alternative of carriage bolting post to outside ... of cutting hole in deck and bolting them inside .. neither appealed to me. So knew these were the way to go when I came across them.
Just finished installing them and wanted to share couple of tips:
1) Set post on top of support just to see which sides and parts of bottom need trimming
2) Use a small block plane or wood shaping (grate) tool to slightly round the bottom edge and corners of the post .. makes it much easier to get these in.
3) Screw in the support to the deck prior to steps 1 & 2
4) Don't force post .. look down sides to see bottom parts that need more trimming .. don't swivel or twist post as this will crack top of support.
5) After getting post into the support .. it will still feel somewhat loose .. don't worry, top screws make it much more solid
6) Use post level to position post so it is level all ways
7) While positioning put in top screws to keep it in level position
That's it ... now post should be level with each other and very secure ... love how easy it was to put in ... and how they look.
