Briochegal: Both sides of my family have roots in Ireland, but I knew nothing about "the Troubles," that plagued the country in the 1970s and 80s. Keefe does a tremendous job of not only presenting the issues, but of the leaders as well. He also shines a not-very-nice light on the English colonialism. But there are"good guys" and "bad guys" on both sides. It is not the English soldiers who take a mother of ten from her home and kill her. His writing is superb and filled with relevant details, such as when the two sisters decide to shake up London with a couple of bombs. Simply unbelievable and yet every word is true.

I've reread it several times, and each time I am stunned anew with the writing and the shocking story.

Beverly: What an eye opener into life in Belfast and Northern Ireland during the troubles. What a scary time to have been living in. Such information about what it was like and how any people died and how easily you could be taken away. It is scary to think that there still remains people today committed to the cause and to think that at any time trouble and violence could erupt.

Carter: The 2019 book entitled: “Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland” by Patrick Radden Keefe is a well-researched and well-referenced book 4-years in the making of some of the history of Ireland and in particular, Northern Ireland and the period called “The Troubles” and the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and the Provisional IRA or “Provos”. Of considerable mention is the Machiavellian role of purported IRA lead and alleged terrorist turned politician Gerry Adams and the results of a Boston College grant to record the oral histories of former IRA members with a promise to control the release of the tapes and transcripts. Also stressed is the brutality of the IRA actions and the aggressive move of attacks from Northern Ireland to London, England in order to bring about change. Of some mention is the role of Bill Clinton and chief negotiator George Mitchell in helping achieve a lasting albeit fragile peace. The main thrust of the book is actions of the IRA and evidence of its aggressive actions. For those interested in this conflict and its resolution the book will be fascinating reading.

mops50: I did purchase this book for my husband, who is from Northern Ireland. He is an extremely slow reader and I managed to read the book fully before he has finished it. It is an extremely factual book and relates incidents and happenings that were occurring in Northern Ireland during the 1970's and following on until 2003 with the sad finding in 2003 of the main character. It describes vividly the horrific violence of that time and the many things that were almost unbelievable. I would recommend this book to anyone who lived in those times as a historic reminder of the dreadful actions that led to devastion and sadness.

Daniel James Fogarty: The IRA was nothing more than a topic of conversation at dinner in my family. It was over there, on the island where my ancestors left in the potato famine. Keefe brings the IRA home, through the eyes of those who killed and saw others killed.

Andrew Cummings: This was the first book I read on the terrible war in Northern Ireland .
The book is a non fiction book, but it is readable and exciting as a novel .
It is one of the best book you will find that shows the human and moral side of war and IRA fighters .

The book chronicles the history of some Ulster Catholics who, after having been mistreated by the English soldiers and the Protestant English citizens of user, decide to fight back . They become part of Ira, the Catholic guerrilla group which fight with terror attacks thé English occupiers . They accept the idea to die and kill for the freedom of Ulster and the Catholic freedom, but all the Irish protagonists become disillusioned .
Some of the Irish protagonists become politicians and start negotiations with the British occupiers, in order to have a democracratic process and build peace between protestants and Catholics.
Other protagonists become hardened fighters of the Ira, who fight against British soldiers and execute spies of the British intelligence. The problem is that these spies of the British are actually innocent people or people of the IRA who have broken certain rules of the terror group.

Patricia M. Terrell: Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe is subtitled A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland. It is very rare for me to ignore everything around me and become completely immersed in a book, no matter how great or suspenseful it is, but that is exactly what happened with this one. Being across the ocean, I really didn’t know that much about life in Northern Ireland during The Troubles, which stretched from 1968 to 1998, at the time events were happening. I first became aware of the deep divisions only after I began researching my ancestry, which led to Ballygawley, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. During trips there, I visited Belfast and took the bus tours which included much about The Troubles and brought me past the Peace Walls and art commemorating both sides. In fact, one of the last British soldiers to be killed had the same last name as my ancestors (Neely), who was killed in an IRA bomb attack outside Ballygawley.
