Djf: I bought these for my son. In the past we have bought him kids walke talkies and they don't last a year, with most barely working out on the box. These are just like the adult versions and seem to be very tough as my son likes to drop and throw his toys. So far these have kept working and some no signs of abuse. Worth the money.

Mr X: Just got these and they look great but ...
Every button push is an attempt to wake the dead on the other side of the planet. Who made the key-push beeps so loud? Do the manufacturers all wear earplugs and so they can't hear the beeps unless they are as piercing as Legolas' arrow at Helms Deep?! My god, it is insanity. Surely the manual tells me how to turn it off? NOPE. There is a secret setting: (1) While turned off, (2) Press and hold the down-arrow-key & power button till it turns on, (3) once again enjoy peace in _some_ of your life. [The setting saves through turning-off/on, mercifully]
To disable the roger-beep do the same but with the up-arrow-key & power-on. (again, not in the user manual)
Next up: UL means.... ? Any guesses? Receiver Volume.
What? UL is volume? like they took the two letters after Vo to make it UL? That is insanity. It should be nothing or it should be Vo or even just S for Sound.
Undocumented critical features knock off some stars. I've found cheapo walkie-talkies that make it simple -- they have button-beep and roger-beep settings in their standard menu, so you can super easy disable or even change your roger-beep...

Sara: Originally ordered these for our 3 year old son’s birthday and we were so happy with the quality that I ended up ordering them again and giving them as a gift for a 6 year old. I like that the Talk button is on the side vs the front next to all of the other buttons- prevents kids from accidentally changing the channel all the time which would drive me nuts. There are cheaper models on Amazon for sure but they are just that- cheaper. Had to return a few before finding these ones, they are definitely worth the couple of extra dollars. Highly recommend

WLP: Probably more like 3.5 stars. Have bought 3 boxes of these for a total of 6 units so far to practice with during hiking and beginner prep for potential emergencies (with plans to upgrade later).
My 7 y/o has a sense of the units' most basic functions. I think these would be most functional for a soludly smart 10 y/o or 12 y/o of average intelligence for kid age starters.
I had quite a time trying to figure out basic operations, set up, and use parameters. The instructions are not amazing. I found that a lot of information out there on FRS+ radios don't slant towards super beginners. Usually my trusty YTube research ventures pull through, but there is either lots of hazy garbage info or too high-level info. My best advice to search something like "best practices for emergency (FRS) radio / walkie talkie use". Those results should at least give you a sense.
Decent sound transmission during our practice runs in our suburban neighborhood were between 1500-1750 feet (so just under a 1/3 of a mile). This was with moderate obstructions (park trees, a park pavilion, wooden play structure, and a 3 story brick faced apartment building) and low-to-moderate elevation...
