Justin Souter: I work with startup founders [e.g. on one programme in 2020 I spoke with ~240 of them]. This is the what I recommend all founders read as an entry-level guide. Excellent - and free. For an advanced course, I recommend Venture Deals by Jason Mendelson and Brad Feld. Thank you Carlos!

ANWER K. QUREISHI: Carlos, kudos to you for providing a thought framework for a novice or a start-up in early stages. The case studies and pertinent links to external resources and examples is invaluable.

Should be a must read for every entrepreneur.

SV@Pond: This book is pretty useful for beginners. However, this book largely talks about the aspects of presentation and money. In fact, from my years of personal experiences, some topics that are crucial in fundraising (such as intellectual property, budgeting, market analysis, etc.) are not addressed or are just briefly touched.

AM: TL:DR: The guy is an active investor and knows what he's talking about so you should pay attention

The first time I heard Carlos speak I thought he was a typical Silicon Valley "know-it-all" ass of an investor- the ones who think they know everything about anything. After all, he dissected our business on day 1 and rejected us to his accelerator (Seedcamp). Luckily for us, we were prudent enough to grab a copy of the Fundraising Field Guide.

I can't tell you just how important this book has been to us. My co-founder and I are a pair of geeks who love building a product. The whole thought of pitching our idea and business to strangers was daunting if not downright terrifying. But being a startup that wants to grow, we knew at some point we'd have to leave our comfort zone to do both sales and fundraising.

This book is not a textbook designed to cram as much information in as few pages as possible. Instead, Carlos focusses on building a fundraising mentality. There are only a few key steps and so long as you are willing to do those steps, you can greatly increase your chances of getting funded and be more comfortable socialising and networking. Some other...

ajac0586: Not exactly what I was looking for, but I can't fault them for that. They were looking for a different audience of people starting their own business and needing funds for that. It's not about charity type fundraising. But the info is pretty good. Some of it is very basic and obvious, but maybe that is necessary and/or appeals to some. As the book goes along, there are more details about how much money to raise (as much as you can) and many ideas about how to get what you need. It's not a book Id tell everyone about, but it's a good read and I think it would be helpful.

Peter Thomson: An excellent summary of things that an early stage startup founder needs to know about raising capital. Carlos has done a great job of pulling everything together in one place. Personally, I would have enjoyed a little bit more of Carlos' hard-hitting and opinionated style from his blog and public speaking.

The section on startup valuation is extremely helpful for founders trying to value their startup before asking for outside investment. Great stuff.
