Barbara Zaroff: Whoever thought up this gadget should get an award. You just put it in to your boiling water with your egg or eggs watch it turn to the specified category of egg you wish to make. I use it what I make hard-boiled eggs. You don't need a timer when you have this wonderful Gadget. It is very inexpensive, and it even makes eggs that are medium or soft boiled. Wouldn't do without it. Couldn't do without it.

You drop it in the pot with your raw eggs. It changes color as the heat causes the eggs to be soft boiled, medium, or hard boiled.

I eat two boiled eggs everyday, so I've boiled literally 10's of thousands of eggs over the years. I've tried a multitude of gadgets and tools for reliably getting a medium boiled egg, and none have been more reliable than this device.
I put it in the pot with my eggs, and then as I near the time window of a perfect egg, I start looking at the color changing dye in the egg to see how close it is to being exactly how I want it. When the border to the darker colored region hits the medium mark, I pull the pot off the stove and bathe the eggs in cold water and a perfect medium boiled egg comes out.
I like it so much, in fact, that when one I bought over a decade ago stopped working, I bought an exact replacement.
The only thing to note is that it can be hard to see in dim conditions through the fog of water vapor. Sometimes I even have to use a slotted spatula to pull it up to the surface to read it, and when I go to put it back in, it likes to flip up-side-down.
