Moen 96988 Cartridge Replacement Kit for Faucet Repair

Tony: Perfect fit but after the install my neighbor alerted me to the fact that Moen has a lifetime warranty. Next one to fail will be replaced by a free unit from Moen. Oh, and you can't lube that thing up too much for the install. My newly greased unit moves so smoooothly now!

PhilC: Removing the cartridge from the shower was the hardest part. I have the o ring remover from this kit (TWCC 32 Size 1440 Pcs O Rings Assortment Kits Metric Nitrile NBR Rubber Washer with Pick and Hook Set for Car Faucet Pressure Plumbing Repair,Air or G) so removing and installing the rings were fairly easy with the picks. Just make sure you loop all the o rings and clean the inside housing. Took me about 45 minutes to complete the job.

Tommymxzx: Pretty easy to replace the guts of my old faucet. I would suggest to get an extra tube of lube. There are a couple good youtube videos to show you how to rebuild the faucet. Don't be stingy with the lube and everything goes back together really easy.

Most mileage getterMost mileage getter: This kit can work, but with some limitations. Here are some step by step recommendations:
1) Verify that the kit is genuine Moen
2) Next, when pulling the existing cartridge, make sure the valve is fully open (!). The rubber skirts damage easily if the valve is shut.
3) If your existing cartridge is semi-fresh, you may be just able to replace the 2 black rubber skirts only - these usually damage first in heavily used showers (see the picture). The metal core underneath the skirts is the biggest non-uniformly moving part in the cartridge. Clean and fully lubricate the metal body under these skirts through the elongated holes. Turn the central core around a few times using pliers so that it lubricates the central area, and clean up the metal surface that rub against the skirts.
4) The included lube with Moen is a tiny packet, buy a big tube of it - food grade silicon, see my picture. Use it generously.
5) If rebuilding the central core and replacing all the rubber gaskets, use lots of lube to put the new ones on the metal core and the new plastic piece.

Gerry Levesque: Same part as the original. After installing the 0 rings on the inside part of the valve, be very careful so you don't damage any 0 ring, when pushing the inside part in the outer cylinder.
