M.J.: I went to 2 different hardware stores, the Home Depot, Lowes, and Menards. None of these stores carried the Moen Cartridges I need to stop the drips, even though they had a place to stock them, and were charging $16/each for them. Instead, I purchased knockoff replacements that claimed to fit, but they were off by 1/16", and DID NOT WORK.

Glad to see that Amazon had them at a great price, and that I could be multiples for my faucets. Was able to easily replace the cartridges with these on my Moen faucets without any problems, resulting in NO MORE leaky faucets. Thanks Amazon!!!

JGBJGB: No one should have to buy these cartridges for the Monticello faucets because they have a life time warranty against finish and dripping.
I tried to use the Moen warranty but the phone message said their phones were experiencing excessive calls, no one answered for warranty service which is typical these days, instead I was offered an appointment for a call back, a date and time was agreed upon but no one called. So much for Moen's warranty.
Our home is 23 years old and two bath faucets have been dripping for a while so time to do something about it with or with out Moen!
First of all, things can go really wrong replacing this two piece cartridge in an old faucet. Half of the cartridge can wind up stuck in the bottom of the cartridge well and then not be able to get it out leaving you in a serious mess like others have written here. One pulled out easy for me. I used a large area washer over the well and screwed in a butter fly wall anchor into the cartridge stem and spun the butterfly on top of the washer, forcing the cartridge out easily, no prying or damage to anything. The other pulled apart leaving half behind to deal with.
The 1224 cartridge is reasonable so...

When they include a short installation guide with pictures, it is obviously not simple to install. However the pictures help quite a bit.

Kaylene Thaler kids: What should have been a simple repair was not!! It took a lot of work to remove the old cartridges. They were installed 12+ years ago and water deposits made it almost impossible to remove the plastic lug nut that hold the cartridge in place. The nuts require a special tool from Moen to remove/install. I ordered the special tool for the lug nut, but it would not provide enough torque to loosen the nut on the hot water side unless I pushed down on the top with my hand and grabbed the cylindrical tool with a wrench to turn it. Plan to buy the replacement lug nut kit, because the moen tool easily chews up the old plastic piece. Fortunately I bought the kit to replace the nut and cartridge extension as well as the cartriges at the very beginning. Unfortunately the special tool would not remove the nut that was even more stuck on my cold water side. The tool tore up the plastic nut so the tool became useless. The tool didn't work, but I still had to remove the plastic nut. Next I removed the colored extension which was screwed to the top of the cartridge so I could pound a chisel into the plastic nut.
