Booknightreviews: This is definitely a book that I loved so much. Maya Angelou shared her insecurities, problems and the ways in which she overcame them. This story is an inspiring piece of work.

Douglass Andrew Morrison: After I finished reading I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, I had the same feelings of sadness, anger, and even guilt, that I experienced after reading Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Toni Morrison’s Beloved. Maya Angelou, like Toni Morrison paints written pictures of some of the individual psychological costs of dehumanizing an entire group of people. The costs of this kind of systemic racism for our entire society are hard for me to fully grasp. I imagine the process is a lot like grief. Perhaps the most important part of that analogy is that I do not think things improve simply by pretending they did not happen.

dave4lolad: Born to dark skins, poor parents in disgusting prejudiced areas, incest raped as a child, Maya overcame these and every disaster life faced to her. Her writing, poetry, and this autobiography has earned the highest awards and deserves the title CLASSICS. Having heard her speak in person, I can attest that she rose high above every life challenge which faced her. Her book, this book, tells the good, bad, ugly, and beautiful TRUTH about one of the world’s GREATEST WOMEN EVER! No, she was not perfect, nor does she claim perfection. Maya just accomplished more real, for others and herself, good than all but a very few humans in history.

Sarah: Ainda não terminei de ler, mas a escrita da Maya sorrateiramente nos coloca imersas na realidade da história. É uma leitura leve e fácil, apesar de tratar de temas profundos.

charliegirl: A wonderful, enlightening book. It's beautifully and sensitively written, yet painfully honest. I had a bit of knowledge of Maya Angelou before reading this, so didn't expect any humorous passages, but some parts of he story made me laugh, (especially some of the church scenes!)
She recounts her sometimes brutal childhood years in the 'deep south' with her intensely devout Grandmother and the experience of the black community in the 1930s: still feeling the 'superiority' of the white people.
Maya comes over as a brave and sometimes foolhardy child, who creates her own adventures, sometimes out of adversity. The incident when her Dad takes her to a bar and what follows is again, tragic, yet funny too! Then she was determined to get a job in a field where black people had never been employed. I was in awe of this young woman!
She has a close and mutually supportive relationship with her brother, Bailey which is lovely to read about, but, ultimately, her need to be loved in her early years, and her lack of 'sex education' in her later years lead to far-reaching consequences for her and her family.
I have ordered the second volume of her autobiography, (Gather together in...

Cheryl Mayo: My 1st experience reading a book by a black author was this book in 1975. Thought I'd revisit again. Mt taste in writing styles have changed. Prefer more narrative themes back and forth conversations. But all in all still one of my favs

Ezra: In my opinion, this is a worthwhile book. It's banned in some schools but the actual portion for which it is banned is not in graphic detail and just demonstrates an unfortunate situation that happened to a young girl from Mississippi. It's just realism. I was driven to keep reading and I'm not great at reading numerous books but this one was exceptional as it depicts some hard truths back in the day as well as what happens in our times now
