Will: I was sold on Makita products several years ago and added this 10 inch chainsaw to what I have. I got the version with two 5 amp-hr batteries. This is extremely nice to use around the yard as I don’t have to prime and pour three or four times and gas up my regular chainsaw. Just grab this thing and cut through up to 5 inch branches already. It’s so light, I was able to climb a small cherry tree and easily and very safely prune it. I’ve never even think about doing that with my large gas power chainsaw as there’s no way I would be able to feel comfortable and do it safely. This little chainsaw is phenomenal. So quick to use!

Lance & Cromwell: I was looking for a small lightweight battery powered chainsaw for doing the final grooming when thinning and/reshaping trees. I was finding saws that were too small and too light duty when I stumbled across this little Makita. It is not going to replace the little Stihl in tree saw in terms of power and speed but it is close enough to be competitive with the advantage you do not have to pull a starter cord each time you are ready to do a cut. The Makita comes with an off-on power switch which insures no accidents while you are moving around in a tree and with Makita's 5.0 and 6.0 amp hour batteries you can generally work for up to an hour before needing to change the battery. When using this saw for its intended use, cutting/trimming smaller limbs, it is relatively fast and efficient. It is not intended for cutting larger limbs or cutting firewood but it could in a pinch. However such use would quickly run the battery down and I certainly would not recommend such use. This saw is meant to complement your larger chain saw and it performs well in that role.

A. Pangelinan: Perfect for a big yard or for MTB trail work because it's light yet powerful and so easy. I can easily carry while riding by parking the saw on my left handle! Sure beats walking miles of trail to a failed tree! I've had gasoline chain saws and they are so temperamental if you do not use them frequently. This guy just starts! I've cut a bunch of felled branches with just one battery (but I have two)!. I was worried that one single 18V batter wouldn't provide enough voltage to be powerful enough, not the case at all. Plenty of power to cut branches 1 in to 16" tree trunks. If you need to cut very big trees many times, you probably nee something more powerful. But for most regular homeowners who have some occasional cutting to do with felled branches after storms, this tool is perfect. Makita is the Apple of Lithium power tools. They just work and the ecosystem to use batteries between different tools is great!

Dave K: If you're looking for a primary chainsaw to regularly cut large logs, this isn't the right saw for you. If you're looking to prune trees, limbing trees, cleaning up around the yard, or cut from a lift, this may very well be the ideal saw for you. At just seven pounds it's incredibly light and maneuverable. It also has a surprising battery life considering it uses only one pack. I spent two full days on a lift cutting several trees to clear power lines and this saw was amazing. Obviously not as powerful as a gas saw, but not having to pull start for each cut easily made up for that. Cutting through 6" branches was easy, and I would say that 8" is probably about the maximum for a comfortable limit. Not to say it couldn't cut larger diameter, but it would take a while and require some babying. I did purchase four battery packs, expecting to go through them pretty quickly, but in hindsight, two would have proven more than adequate, as I was getting at least an hour of time from each (a few cuts, repositioning, a few more cuts...). To say I'm happy with it is an understatement.

Arthur L. Ranney: I bought this saw to carve a stump in my front yard, but that project was put on the shelf by the derecho, which downed a huge oak tree that blocked the road. I used the Makita to trim small branches and to cut larger branches up into firewood. The saw will cut a 6-inch oak branch with very little trouble, but you pay a price in battery life, so I used it for branches up to about 4 inches in diameter. I used my 18-inch gas saw for the larger pieces (actually, I handed the gas saw to my brother-in-law so I could do the test drive on the Makita myself). The saw is fast, quiet, and can be handled with one hand. There was no issue with the battery-saving auto shutoff; the timing was fine. Chain adjustment is super-simple, chain oiler worked well (I put it on max), and the batteries charged within the advertised time. By the time I ran a battery down, the backup was ready to go.
